Question about weaning When do puppies normally stop nursing? Lilah's babies are 7 wks old today, and while they are eating solid food (and very well, I might add!) they still like to nurse. I was just wondering when pups are usually weaned completely. |
It really depends on the momma. Some will let the pups nurse until they are 8 to 10 weeks old even though by that time the mom usually has very little milk. Just make sure the puppies nail are kept cut. The momma will start snapping at the puppies when she has had enough. Just make sure the puppies always have food available. I always leave out bowls of dry ground up puppy food. |
Sassy's puppies are almost 10 weeks old and she is still letting them suck for a few seconds, then she plays with them for quite a bit before wanting out of the puppy pen. She still barks to get in with them, so we always let her. It is really fun to watch her interact with them, as normally she is not a playful dog. The puppies have been eating puppy food for several weeks so don't need her milk, but sure do go after mamma with gusto:D |

Personally, I do not like automatic feeders and waters. The water that is in bowl can get icky pretty quick and harbor bacteria. I don't know how often you fill it but I think it is important to give them fresh water twice a day. I don't think the dog food stays as fresh either when it is in a automatic feeder but again it depends on how often you are filling the feeder. |
