This is my first time showing/selling puppies, but I have found that the best way is to just simply say, "I'm sorry, I'm only showing them on Saturday." Usually, if they are serious about wanting a good dog, they will be just fine with that. Also, I've found that opens up a new dialog about questions that they have in the meantime, etc. We've already found one great home for one of the boys, and he called to make a "playdate" appointment on a Wednesday, and didn't come until Saturday.

Also, I never give out my address unless I have talked to them a few times, and know they are serious about coming over. With one caller, their first question was the price, the second was our address. I just said the area of town that we lived in, and said if they have any other questions, call me back. They never did of course.

I don't think any honest buyer would doubt you being cautious. Good Luck!

I always talk to potential buyers several times after they have completed an initial application. I call them, and they call here. I also google my potential buyers too. I ask my husband to be home at the time we have puppy buyers.

I hadn't thought of going to the vet's office. My vet is always so busy I don't think we could find a place to have a conversation.....but that is a great idea.

This is a great idea. I would also include a section on the application for references (the family's vet, a personal reference and a neighbor) and verify with all 3 before I would even consider talking further with a buyer. There are always so many horror stories that I definitely agree with everyone that its better to be safe than sorry.

I haven't yet taken the jump to breed my first litter--thank goodness--because knowing me I would DNA test and background check potential puppy buyers!!

I have used Google Earth on addresses and seen kennels in people's back yards. End of sale.

I have tried the references on the application but I prefer to get them after I have talked to the potential buyers a few times. Today, most vet offices want an okay from their clients first anyways, so it saves me time on making phone calls.

That is sooo neat!! I am going to go to a search and see if I can pull up that! What a neat concept!

I just wanted to add another buyer prospective, I want the right dog and respect the hard work that you do as a breeder. If they are really interested, they will wait. I have always waited. The last breeder didn't give me her address until the morning of the day we met, and because there were puppies in the house we used lots of hand sanitizer. This was reassuring to me to see that she cared. And a good buyer will see things that are extra precautions as a positive. I understand that people are excited but there is never a reason that they should have to come over right away. Good luck finding wonderful homes for your babies!:)

I was one of those people that will want to come right away to see the pup and that was what I did when we were getting Pao. I had a lot of patience at first and went through applications to adopt one from a rescue and that went south and weeks/months passed and I want a puppy so bad as I didn't have any friends here during that time and I badly needed a pup for companion as I was also depressed. I eventually gave up trying to adopt after one very bad experience with a rude person who called me from a rescue. After that, looked at a lot of ads and asked around and when I met Pao's breeder through an online ad, I emailed and I asked if we could come right away and they said yes and that was what we did at 10pm at night! But I do agree the economy is really bad right now and it never hurt to be extra cautious over things.

UPDATE

Ok so I fallow some of you guys great advice!! :D

I google the info of all potential buyers, phone numbers address, name...

I book all appointments for the same day.

I call them all back to confirm the appointment to make sure they gave me their real information.

I also discreetly hold my RED PEPPER SPRAY in my hand,ready to go when I open the door.;)

I told one suspicious person to call just before they get here so I can put my "Pitbull" away. lol

All my puppies have been sold to wonderful families.

Go with your gut feelings they are usually always right!
Here where I live in Vancouver BC Canada some guys called about seeing & buying a wee Yorkie puppy & called to see when they could go over & when they did go over they stole all the puppie's..pointing a gun @ the owners...so sad:(
just go by your feelings..:thumbup:
