most simple way to keep hair off babies? Ok what are your methods for keeping the hair off the babies (when they are nursing)? For those of you that have your females in a long coat*:confused: It kills me every time I have to trim up their hair as I am paranoid about the pups choking. I was wondering if there is a way (besides foiling) that keeps the hair away and that the puppies can't yank out whatever is holding it too??. I hate trimming up their hair each time!! I love the long silky coat look! Nemo's mommy is due and I just can't stand the thought of trimming up her hair again!! :(:( |

I'm not a breeder, but found you question interesting. Is there some reason you couldn't just use the small latex bands used in topknots? You know, mulitple pony tails to gather the hair away? Some latex bands work better than others as far as staying in. |

I did think about the bands, but mine tend to come out fairly easy if the try and go at it and it starts looking frazzled and starts to get knotted. Maybe it is just the bands I have??:confused: But I would like something that is going to stay in without messing up their coat. |
I have purchased many different sized bands; I think the smallest diameter is 3/16 with the widest 1/4. The difference in thicknesses of the actual latex varies greatly among suppliers too.. The thicker ones seem to grasp the hair much tighter, but it is recommended that you cut the band out, the thinner bands and scrunchy type bands come off too easily, to use in the way you suggested because they are really stretchy. I purchased so many, I'm not sure which place has the thicker bands. If You know how to do a french braid you could maybe try to french braid her on one side and then the other and maybe that would last for a few days before it would need to be redone. I have never tried that so I would make sure you are at home to check it often in case it came loose and 'caught' a puppy in the braid, but that's my un-educated guess.:confused: |

The lady I work for breeds yorkies and keeps them in long cut--she just shaves the entire belly/nipple area being very careful not to get the outer skirting hair. They get shaved from their bootie almost to their pits and she has had good success with no puppies getting tangled in the hair. My yorkie girl is spayed, and I have her in show coat, I actually trim her up this way so the hair on her tummy doesn't get all tangled--she looks good, but less to brush/tangle. For Mommies I shave all of their belly and private areas. The rest is all kept long and I put it up in ponytails down both sides...usually three on each side. You MUST take out and brush a min every other day and put back up or you will end up with snarles or parts will fall out of the bands and be in the way. |
I place the hair of the mother in wrappers , instead of having them on the side , I wrapped it on the back like a little dinosaur . |
