What is the best day of pregnancy to do a planned c-section? 1 Attachment(s) my 3lb. rescue yorkie is going to have to have a c-section. i didn't have her when she was bred,but i am thinking she is around day 50-55. i don't want to schedule a c-section and have the pups be premature,but i don't want to wait and have it become an emergency c-section either. so what is the earliest the puppies will survive? thanks in advance! |
All I can tell you is what my vet does but it is on the fact we know when they tied and he will do a C on the 61 day unless they go into labor before. Did you go to the vet today ? |
Did you take her to the vet today? What did the vet say? Since you don't know when the female was bred then you don't really have any idea how far along she is. The normal gestation period from time of conception is 63 days. Usually puppies born on day 59 or later will do just fine. I am not in favor of scheduling c-sections but in this case you need to follow the advice of the vet. It should be about the welfare of the momma and not just about saving money or convenience. I do pray the little momma will be okay. I know you will do all you can for her. |
hi! they couldn't get her into the vet until tomorrow. i have talked to several people and they say c-section. i don't want to do an emergency one. if it is well planned it will probably go better. it is hard because i don't know what day she is on,but they should be able to tell by the x-rays tomorrow probably. she has been eating like crazy and digging little beds everywhere. i am hoping she only has one... |

Even planned, my vet was very flexible with the timing of the csection. I had to watch Sicily really closely, so we could do the c/s before she startedactive labor, but not too early. (and we knew the tie dates so we were a little more exact on the age of the pups.) Anyway, the one major signal that got her in was when I could express milk. Be careful though- my sister lost an entire litter of English Bulldogs because the vet took them a few days too early. Good luck with your little girl! |
I have had females that had milk a full week prior to delivery so you cannot really go by that. Also, some females have no milk prior to delivery Are you feeling a lot of movement from the pups yet? Usually a few days before delivery the pups get very active and they also drop. How old is this little girl? |
in case you need help Financial Aid for Animals it has a list of finacial aid for vet expenses. I would think since you rescued her that they might help you with the vet cost. Let us know how she is doing |
hi, thanks. i don't need financial aid...i was just wondering about what i should be planning on :) i haven't felt the puppies moving. her x-rays are at two today... BUT she is already having discharge this morning...is that normal??? i was thinking she would only be on day about 50-55,but maybe i am wrong...oy, so frusterating. i may be having a c-section done today for her. i am guessing my vet will be able to tell about what day she is on..then we can go from there... |
It's not that easy for a vet to tell what day they on on from an x-ray. An ultrasound may tell more but only if the vet or technician is very skilled and has lots of experience with puppies |

Hi everyone! My fears were in vain. As far as the vets can tell she is not pregnant! Just gaining lots of weight from the good food she is finally on. She got an ultra-sound and the think they found a kidney stone though :( Here is the good news! At the same time I took in my 5lb. yorkie and she is pregnant! (planned breeding). They did x-rays and an ultrasound and they saw 3 and possibly 4 little munchkins playing in there. She has about 2-2 1/2 weeks to go :) Thank-you all! And I will keep you updated on Lillie's puppies. |

yes of course she will be spayed. she is barely over 3lb. and i think 4-5 is definately pushing it to be bred. my 4-5lb. female that is pregnant was completely and thoroughly checked by my vet. of course there can be complications with any whelping,but it looks like she will do great. They are both about 2 1/2 years old. thanks again everyone! |
