Constipated Puppy Hi guys one of my little guys, I think is constipated. He pooped and when I checked his rear after cleaning him up I noticed that his butt was very red and inflamed and it looks like a portion of his rectum is peeking out his rear. I just gave him a sub cue of ringers to add some fluids, but am reluctant to give him a little enema because he has strained so hard I don't want to hurt his little insides even though the tubing is very small and soft and flexible. What would you guys do? Thanks in advance. Isn't it fun how this stuff happens on Sunday? Hugs! |
Hi, I've had this trouble before. My vet gave me Laxatone, which is for cats when they have hairballs. I'm sure their is something comparative at petsmart. You hat e to see them suffer, especially when they so little! Good luck |
Thanks, I am not sure I will get to Petco (they are 100 miles away) today, but I am wondering if there is something I can use in the baby isle of Walmart...have to check my references...he's sleeping right now. I forgot to say they are 4 weeks old and we are in the weaning process. They are still taking from Mom too. |
Unable to poop Hi, try a tablespoon of pumkin in a can. Not the one with all the stuff to make pumkin pie with.this helps my 6 little ones.;) |
kewl, I will do that.. I did give him some full fat organic yogurt on his tongue. Just a dab. He's sleeping now. I am going back to just the formula in their bowl for now. They havent taken the mush yet, just licked the liquid, but maybe it is stopping him up. I would give him a diluted colace enema, but don't want to because his little hiney is so inflamed. I'll prolly sub cue him again when he wakes up just to get him hydrated up and maybe his hiney will relax and go back to normal. |
I suggest putting some Panalog on his little butt. The medicine will clear that up pretty quickly. As far as constipation that depends on his age as to what I would recommend giving him. Milk for young puppies helps to soften their poop, older dogs I give canned pumpkin. |
I don't have any panalog, but will get some tomorrow. I do have some antibiotic eye ointment, would that work? I know its the opposite end. I know he is dehydrated and I am working on that now. His pee is yellow and I will give him another sub cue in another hour. He did take some esbilac and water and perked up a bit. Also gave him a dab of nutrical on his tongue and he nursed off of mom a bit. They are all sleeping so I will check on him again in a bit. Thanks for the advice. |
Have you actually seen his stool? Was it hard. When puppies have coccidia they will strain and their butts will get red and sore looking. A little karo syrup and water will help soften the stool if he is constipated. Also for weaning, I recommend you put down a bowl of finely ground up dry puppy food and a bowl of water. If they are nursing from momma then they don't need the mush, they will just lick the ground up dry food. You will find that weaning is much simpler using this method. |

I will do the ground food thing. he woke up and his nose was cold wet. he drank some more formula. I just put a little neosporin on his butt and it looked like it was trying to go back in a bit. you guys are awesome! |
I haven't seen his stool except for some around his butt. maybe he has diarrhea. mom is so good at cleaning up. last week he had a hard one. |
Was the poop on his butt hard and dry? If that is the case then his butt is red and irritated from having the poop stuck to it and the straining might have just been from him trying to get the poop off. If the poop was soft and icky then you need to get him to the vet and have his stool check for coccidia. You might also want to trim the hair on the bottoms of all the puppies. |
he was straining and the poop was wet that time and his rectum seems to be sticking out of his anus. He was more animated this afternoon, but I am still going to do another sub cue and get him to the vet tomorrow. He nursed, but I had to encourage him to. I gave him some more nutrical because of the oil and corn syrup in it. His urine output seems to be okay, but a little yellow. The other kids are doing fine. I will send him to the vet, just to be safe. |
sorry I haven't responded back but it has been a very busy week. I took him to the vet the next day and he said, as you guys said not to give the formula mixed with the puppy food, just do water. He said vaseline on his butt and it would resolve itself in a few days. Well, I must say they are all eating very well and thanks so much for the advice! |
I think Zeus is constipated too. He was straining quite a bit tonight to poop and then couldn't get it all out. I think he may be dehydrated just because he is not regular water drinker. He is not red or irritated on his rear but it look like there is something that needs to come out. He will be 11 wks tomorrow. Any suggestions?? |
