Just a question I know i may get a lot of opinions on this one but i have a question. Do breeders usually sell puppies to "brokers" if so why and if not why not....I have some friends looking to buy a puppy and i am just trying to gather some info. Thanks in advance |
I don't and won't, I want to have the final say as to where my puppies end up! :p |
thanks |
Angie, I would never consider a broker! A breeder if reputable IMHO takes the responsiblity in each breeding from the moment they buy their breeding bitch and dog through the placement of their offspring. I couldnt breed in good conscience without serious interaction with the potential parents. A breeder/broker relationship is based first and foremost on profit, get em in gem em out attitude and breeding program. Second, the breeder more often than not is weaning their pups very young. Third, allow placement at 6 weeks old with little to none vet care, vaccination, socialization. |
Personally, no, I would not use a broker. I want to know where my babies are going. I want to keep in touch with the new owners. When I had bought a dog, the lady tried to encourage me to use a broker. She didn't have to mess with this or mess with that. Whatever. I wouldn't do it. |
Thank you all for your opinions its helping us help them make a very informed decision. |
broker No, I do not...and anyone interested in future Yorkie club membership should not..you will not be permitted to join if you do so or have done so. |
[SIZE=3]I am still having trouble reading small print so I didn't read all the replies. BUT, I would NEVER sell to or buy from a broker. I know some people do and say they got a healthy, well-socialized baby. But, why would anyone put money in the pocket of such horrible people even for a healthy pup? Just wait and find a responsible, caring breeder..JMHO |
Breeders who advertise for other breeder friends on their website are "brokers" too so it is important to understand the definition, but I found my Ava through a breeder who didn't have a litter but was friends with someone who had a litter and they work together. I think this form of "brokerage" is not a problem imo because the breeder never lets go of control of where the puppy goes. I have worked with other brokers as well who I find care greatly about "their" dogs and are in it for the best interest of the puppies foremost and hopefully a profit, but not at the expense of the puppy. They know the importance of their reputation and the health of the puppies and are well versed and exerienced in the needs of the puppies and the health concerns, won't let them go until they are big enough and not earlier than 12 weeks for sure so I don't know why there is a prejudice against "brokers" as a category. I, of course,am not in favor of big puppymill brokers like the Hunte Corportation but I think there are smaller brokers who are very reputable. Hefner's broker/breeder was a breeder turned broker because she, like most of us, realize it takes a certain personality to be a breeder and she didn't have it but she still wanted to work with puppies. She has saved many a puppy who were written off by the vets and even breeders in her over 30 years in the business and I have the utmost respect for her. Just to clarify she was the broker for her grandmother who was deaf. Good luck! |

Kim ....the above is not true! I post friends pups on my web page only when I do not have pups...with MY FRIENDS contact information, the potential buyer does NOT contact me for details "friends selling pups" simply shows the pics, availibility and sometimes pricing and contact information I have nothing to do with the placement AT ALL!! that is not a broker... A broker is when someone profits from a sell!!! plain and SIMPLE! |

I post puppies on my website that belong to my good friends with my contact information on my expected litters. If some one asks about a puppy that is not mine I inform them that the baby belongs to my friens and let the two work directly with each other. I do not profit from the contaact. A broker is someone who profits from the sell and they profit big time financially. |
There is absolutely nothing "dirty" or bad in the busniess world about the term "broker" and it is true that the third party should be compensated in some way, but technically, the "payment" or compensation can be simply a reciprocal agreement where each breeder agrees to help with the other's litter and vice versa. I was not trying to be negative but simply to point out that the term "broker" fits a wide range of business relationships and is not always bad. There is a percieved "bad" connotation in the puppy business because of the big brokers who buy from puppymills mostly I think, but there are also plenty of situations where it is just one breeder helping another out and having a reciprocity going . It is quite common among mentors and their mentees for example. A mentee will have a litter and sometimes the babies are the product of the mentor's lines since she sold the mentee her breeding stock, and the mentor becomes the broker when she helps sell the mentees littler, and she knows the lines very well because they are her lines but she does not own them so she is a broker not the actual breeder. |
This is a semantics game again I see. I breed and I refer. I do not and will not condone brokering of dogs in any way. Brokering of dogs leaves a gap in the communication between breeder and owner. Breeders should bear the responsibility for the placement of the dogs they produce...AND be available for continuing support and exchange of information throughout the life of the dog. I am currently mentoring someone who is looking to begin breeding. When she has pups I will REFER people to her and she will deal with them on her own, with, of course, my guidance and support if she needs it. I will not be compensated nor have I ever been compensated for Referring anyone to another breeder. Referring and Brokering are NOT the same thing and should not be confused. |

IMO I don't see anything wrong with a referral fee or a brokerabe fee if a third party puts a buyer and a seller together. |

although the definition is clear KIM of a broker! The noun broker has one meaning: Meaning #1: a businessman who buys or sells for another in exchange for a commission Synonyms: agent, factor |
I GET IT just fine Kimberly. There is no need to be so defensive. I never said that every referral or mentor relationship was that of a broker....I just said that SOME are and there is nothing wrong with it. Most people who saw puppies from another breeder on a website would assume that there is some business realtionship there. I also did not infer that ALL mentor relationships involve brokering...I simply used that relationship as an example of one where I know from personal experience that it does happen. Another example of a broker in the puppy business is the large websites like DivaPup that are primarily advertising vehicles for breeders and the broker has the large, well known and flashy website and the breeders of all different breeds pay DivaPUp to advertise on their site and DivaPup gets a commission if the puppy is sold through exposure on their site. The breeder still maintains complete control of the puppy and the buyer talks diectly to the breeder about the puppy but the broker handles the contract and the money exchange. I know a lot of people on here do not like DivaPup because of some negative stories on the internet, but I have had no real experience with them and I am not referring people to them but merely using them as an example of a broker where the breeder doesn't lose the control over the terms of the sale and who the dog goes to and what information they receive about the puppy and his parents. All of my examples fit the definition of a broker. |

Hi Kim how are your babies doing? I saw them on your site and they are sweeties! |
awww thanks for asking the babies are doing just wonderful! |

thank god life gives us choices and I would never choose a BROKER! |
My $.02 If the breeder and the person selling/advertising have a relationship, they are in fact not a broker. Someone who sells their puppies wholesale to another person for selling with the original breeder having no "say" in where the puppy's forever home is, is a broker relationship. |

Kimberly~ If I bought a puppy from a woman who is a breeder and whose grandmother is a breeder, but the grandmother is deaf and doesn't handle the sales negotiations, but it is the grandmother's puppy I am buying, did I buy from a broker in your opinion? Second scenario~ If I call a breeder and describe the puppy I want and she says she doesn't have a puppy like that right now but her friend who is a breeder has just what I am looking for and she gives me the friends number and I talk to the friend about the puppy and deal only with the puppie's breeder from there on but the friend gives the one who told me about her $200 from the transaction, did I buy from a broker in your opinion? Both of the above scenarios would be considered brokered transactions under the law in every state in this country. |
ok this will be my last response to this thread because it seems to be going NO where, same song second verse! Kim ....if someone profits from a sale, selling someone elses pups then YES IT IS A BROKER! If you want to call it a referal fee then sobeit (something like the softer terminology). A broker is a broker is a broker! If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, then guess what, its a duck! Brokers motivation is the money their primary focus is the sale not the best placement, their true interests are in the bottom line not the end result, you cant color it any other way Kim no matter how hard you try in your phraseology! |

Kim, no one here would dispute your knowledge on the legal definition of a broker. That is Your field not ours. We just disagree with your opinion on the value of using one and don't want there to be confusion about the difference between a referral and a broker. That's all. |
