Predicting coat color? 2 Attachment(s) I don't know if this is the right place or not, please correct me if I am wrong. I already have two yorkies, but I am pretty addicted so I know I want one more. I don't care about the sex or anything, but I want a specific coat color Is there any way that breeders can guarantee a coat color or is that all up in the air? Also I am unsure if the color that I am looking for is part of their breaking process or an actually coat color. The picture that I have is of an adult I think, but not sure. |
i don't think they can ensure coat color because just like size things can change. however if you are looking for a dark coat yorkie you can usually say they will be darker as an adult if they are really dark as puppies. however, the dark coated yorkies are sometimes cotton coated as well. i have one like that. |

4 Attachment(s) you can see that she was darker as a baby. now, at almost 3 years old, when her coat is shaved down it looks more blue-ish but when it grows out its blacker |
The best way to predict adult color is to look at the mom and dad |

Always look at the parents...but it's still not a guarantee. One thing that I've learned is no one can guarantee coat texture, size or color. There are always "throwbacks". You can have two pure silk coated dogs that may "throw" a cotton coat, modified coat, etc. Two standard parents can "throw" a teapot or a runt. Two black/tan parents can "throw" a steel blue and vice versa. Always check to see if the parents are a good representation of the breed and try to choose a pup that is at least 12 weeks or older. The older they are, the more chances that you'll know what you'll get. Good luck! |
Thank you guys so much. I thought that maybe the coat color was something that was more controlled than size.:rolleyes: One more quick question... When I was looking for my current yorkies I had an ad online and a lady who says she is a hobby breeder says that she has a "blue" yorkie that she is willing to part with very cheap. Is this a birth defect or could the puppy be okay? |
I would ask her if this is a blue coated yorkie or a blue born yorkie. Blue borns are the ones that generally (though not 100%) have many health problems. If it's a blue coated, then that is what you want. :) |
If you are looking for a darker pup also look to see if they are breaking color or not. The older they are when they break the better if you want dark. |

She said that is was blue born and not just with a blue coat. So you wouldn't advise getting it? |
