Supplementing Ravenous Puppies? Hi All, I have 4 - 2 1/2 week old pups and they are all over 20 ounces...the two largest ones are 22 and 24 oz. respectively. I don't know how mama can keep up with them! The smaller two have slowed down on their growth to less than an oz. a day. Should I be offering them a sip of formula out of a saucer now and then, or rely on mama solely? Any advice would be appreciated. They are all doing well and I want to keep it that way :) |
How big is the momma? As long as the momma is eating well and not loosing weight then I would just continue to let them nurse as usual. Just make sure momma has plenty of food so her calcium levels do not drop. Sometimes if the mom has plenty of good rich milk the puppies will get to be little butterballs. My last litter was like that. I would wait until they are at least 3 1/2 to 4 weeks before introducing them to food. I always wait until they are walking and then I just put down a bowl of finely ground dry puppy food and a bowl of water. It sounds like you have an excellent momma. |
Thanks for your reply! Momma is a good sized girl and was 11 pounds before she delivered. She is smaller now than when we she came to us, so I should weigh her, but she is eating like a horse, so that is good and I give her yogurt every couple of nights. She loves that. I feed her a mix of the royal canin puppy and holistic select gold. She is such a good mom. They are completely adorable and I am totally in love! |
Sure doesn't sound like you need to supplement. If there gain slows down it's nothing to worry about as long as mom has milk and they are still gaining. In another week you can start feeding ground up puppy food if they seem to be hungry. They sound like healthy puppies |
little porkers LOL...thanks. Mom is letting them sleep more, so she is naturally trying to slowly lessen the suckle time. |
