Sophie just had two pups but one stillborn. She has this kind of behavior...! :( Hi, I wanted to ask a question about the after pregnancy behaviors in a yorkie. Sophie just had her puppies yesterday but one died :(. She has been an excellent mommy to her only pup, but one thing that worries me is that she's often picking it up and moving it from her pet bed http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/l...rey_loader.gif to the "labor pet bed" (a larger one), so I tried putting her pet bed inside the "labor" bed one and she still continued to pick it up and taking it to other places. The pup was crying the whole time she was carrying it. What should I do? At first I took it away, because I thought she was being aggressive but then I let her do whatever she wanted to do, after all nature takes over and she's the mom. I just am worried, she's still doing it. Please help!! |
Congratulations on your new litter. I am so sorry you lost one baby. Your momma's behavior is fairly normal and she is looking for privacy for herself and her baby. I always keep my momma's confined in a big x-pen until the puppies get older. Do you have other dogs around in the house? The momma needs to be confined to a smaller area where she feels safe. I always drape sheets on the sides of the x-pen to give the momma more privacy. How is she doing today? |
I am sorry to hear about the puppy. I think she is looking for a safe and private area to be alone with her baby, maybe she is worried something will happen to it as well. I keep mine in my office in her cage with a sheet draped over it. And my other dogs, well, they aren't in the same room with mommy and babies. So, yes I feel her behavior is perfectly normal. Good Luck with the new puppy. Oh, and welcome to yorkie talk. :welcome4: :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
When my Bell had her premature litter we lost 2, and she had two the lived, She was always moving those babies. I think she didn't trust me. I took away her first two and she wasn't letting me take the last two. Of course I might be wrong, but she has had a litter since that and she didn't move any one those. |

She's trying to hide her puppy. What you need to do is put her and her pup in a quiet area away from the rest of the household. Put her whelping bed in a play pen, off the ground to avoid drafts (whelping area should be kept at 80 degrees, but you probably know that). Make sure the area is covered. The first 8 weeks of the puppy's life, all that is needed is mom. So, keep puppy handling to a minimum; only handle to weigh, take temp and make sure that mom is diapering. |
Sophie this is so familiar with me. we just had this same experience and my yorkie's name is also Sophie. I posted a question and had so many replies that it was great. We ended up loosing the second pup after 2 days and had such a hard time but now we are much better. My Sophie also tried to move her puppy and now I'm learning about the playpin. Do you set up a litter box or does your Sophie go outside at all. My Sophie wouldn't leave the bed where her puppy was. |
Thanks!! It worked out!! Hi, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied to my question. My boyfriend placed a box over Sophie's bed and she loves it!! She stays in there with her baby, does not take him out or carry him. We are so relieved!! One thing though, should I be feeding her puppy kibble and goat's milk so she can prodce enough milk? We are also giving multi vitamins, cottage cheese and eggs. Is this ok?? |
HI Salford Yes, Sophie is going outside to potty, she comes back in and runs back to her baby!! |
