What age to have first babies? I have always heard its better to wait till 2 yrs old for Yorkies to get pregnant with their first litter. My yorkis are 9 months old (week apart) and have started showing a sexual interest. The girl is humping the boys head and vise versa. I do not want her pregnant at this age and I believe it might be possible. Correct me if I am wrong. Is their a shot yet to prevent pregancy and if in heat is it too late? How can you tell a week or 2 before they are in heat? I read something about the pill but it should be started before actually in heat. Do any of you breeders have some knowledge to share? Susan |
Yes, they can concieve a litter now and yes, they are too young. The only sure way to keep that from happening is to keep them separated from the males. As far as determining when their heat cycle has begun, you just have to be very consistant in watching for signs of it's onset. |
My females also start humping the males or females, right before they go into heat, its one of the signs I watch for also.:) |
I also wanted to say and couldn't go back and edit my first post, your babies are too young to breed at 9 months. I try to wait until mine are almost 2 or alittle before 2.:) |
I wait until mine are 2 yrs old as well. Definitly keep them separated while she is in heat. You might end up with an "oops" pregnancy. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
With Yorkies, first breeding would be okay at 18 months or second heat. Of course this might not be right for all of them though. No first time breeding after three years old. There is a shot if the female gets pregnant but it is dangerous. The best way is to get at least one of them altered or take one to somebody else's house so there are no oops litters. |
