Anyone hear of mom killing other babies Wow. .. my friend called me crying and told me that she had taken her litter of puppies to the vet to have their tails/dews done. She has two ex pens and left the mom in one... Here is the thing she had another female with two week old pups in another ex pen (same room). While she was gone, she said the mom somehow got out (never had before even thought they shared that room for the past month) and when she got home with the babies the other mom was in the ex pen and there was blood and all the babies were dead. She said the puppies actual mom just kept licking the puppies. My heart is soooooooooo sad. I went and just stared at my babies just to reassure myself they were ok. What in the world would make a mom do that do another moms baby? I assume it is "a nature" thing. I told her to get her spayed as soon as her babies were weaned. I am trying so hard to understand why /how that could happen. She lost 3 beautiful babies and is having a very hard time. I am ...and there not even mine!!!:confused::( Has this ever happened to anyone. I wanted to post this to maybe help someone else if they ever had two females in the same room. What gets me is that they were in two different ex pens!!!! So sad!!!! Is the mom sick or is it instinct or what. I think she should be spayed but I really don't know much about that sort of thing!! |
OMG...how tragic....I have never heard of such a thing.....sooo sad. |
Me either. Makes me a little nervous now about my own girls being in the house with our new babies! I do keep them out of the room though..but still!!! |
I am not a breeder, but do know there is a lot of hormones and chemicals running thru a 'Mom' - Also, your friend (or anyone else for that matter) probably should NEVER leave unspayed females alone like that together, especially with babies....The Mom that killed was probably upset that 'her' babies were gone and she acted :( I have also heard of males killing babies too :( ...so sad... |
Yes, I have heard of this happening before. There are too many hormones running rampant during that time to fully trust a female. When Molly had her babies I kept her them in our bedroom with the door shut all the time until they were several weeks old...I just never knew how her sisters and their Daddy would react and I didn't want to take any chances. |
I'm so so sorry. This is very sad news :( I will keep your friend in my thoughts. |
yes, it happens and has even happened to people on here in the past. i'm sorry for your friends loss. |
I used to work at a Vet clinic and there was a German Shepherd that had a litter of 12 puppies. She killed every one of them and they were her own puppies! I wonder if they get postpartum too. Such a sad, tragic story! I'm so sorry for her! |
I had a mom try to eat her newborn once. Luckily I had another mom with milk and I put the little boy with her. She was spayed and placed in a pet home and is doing well, some of them just aren't cut out to be moms I guess. I have a friend also who had a similar thing happen, except they were 8 week old pups. Her unspayed female (not their mom) jumped the xpen and killed one of the 8 week olds. She had her spayed and placed her. |
I'm not getting the spaying part. To this mother, her babies were taken all of a sudden and the owner leaves her in the same room (in seperate expens) with another yorkie an different puppies. With her hormones and instincts, she just reacted. She could still be a good mother, albeit a supervised one. I don't think she is a killer. Not that the owner done this own purpose mind you, but the dog was practically set up for failure. My dogs climb expens all the time. This is a tragedy. The owner just didn't think. But it's not the mother's fault either. |

My friend was afraid her female had aggression problems because she had no babies at the time, just jumped in and killed this 8 week old for no reason. I wasn't saying this girl should be spayed, just telling my own stories about moms attempting to kill or killing babies...:( |
More suggestions??????????????? I would like to read the other posts of that happening to others. Anyone have the links to the posts? :( Now she is trying to decide if she should take away the moms puppies and bottle feed them instead. She said the mom has picked them up several times moving them around and she is beside herself worried she will kill her own babies too! I really don't know what the heck to tell her!! Any suggestions??? |

Years ago a friend of mine had the same thing happen to her. Two poms got into a fight over one puppy and she said the puppy got ripped apart. |

Please tell your friend that I understand how much she hurts right now. We all make mistakes. I am sure she never dreamed this could happen. I am so sorry this happened to her babies. |
This is very normal and it does not mean she needs spayed, This is not first time this has happened and sadly wont be the last. always keep your momma dogs, daddys and others away from a mother and her pups. |

Is there any way that the poor momma that lost her babies could nurse/raise one of the puppies from the other litter?? |
Oh I will pass on the well wishes to her, she needs them. I spoke w/her and she told me she is not willing to take the chance of putting the babies with the other mom, for fear of rejection. There are 4 in that litter. I guess I would be scared too that the mom may hurt them since they are not hers. She said she is going to sell the mom without the babies now because she is afraid of the two girls together now. I told her it wasn't her fault, but she said she keeps picturing the dead pup in her mouth when she tried to get them away from her. (The real mom, just didn't want to let her dead babies go is all!) Poor little one! I think more so she wants to sell her due to her guilt over it. Shame too she is a beauty and was a very good mom to her babies. I thought about taking her but I have my own girls to deal with now and maybe downsizing a few myself! Maybe it will pass in a few days as she is just upset with herself right now. I hope she keeps her as it was not her fault. I would be more apt to let the one that attacked the babies go instead! Of course I don't know how I'd feel if I was actually in the situation so I try not to judge! |
Well, I don't think the mom that lost her babies would hurt the other ones, she would probably gladly accept them but then the owner would be right back in the same situation where the one female might try to get them back. If these females got along just fine before the puppies were born then there is no reason to rehome the poor momma that lost her babies. It was not either of the dogs fault. The female I had that killed the two pups is still with me. She is 9 years old now and she was always a wonderful mother and she also helped raise other females pups before. It is just common for mommas with new pups to be very protective. No matter how sweet mine are, once they have pups, I do not take any chances. Tell you friend to make sure the momma has some privacy. I always hang sheets on the side of the x-pen so the momma feels more like she is in a den. It also cuts down on the drafts. If other dogs are looking in at them it makes them nervous. That is probably why the momma is moving her puppies around. |
Omg.. I feel so bad reading every post in this thread..I also think as upset as this breeder is.. she needs time to think and not be so hasty in wanting to let that female go.. Would it not work to put one baby with her.. rub the baby all over herself and then with a blanket of something the mom that lost her babies had.. to get the scent on the new baby... I think I would try this first.. but have not know anyone this happened to.. I do know I have babies that are 5 weeks old today.. and my new little boy ran through the baby gate and into the nursery.. momma went after him.. but since I was right there.. I was able to keep it under control and grab our little boy out of there.. And people even my hubby thinks I can be paranoid.. it is like she lost two babies out of 4.. I do not need anything more to happen to her.. anne |
So sorry to hear this. A hard lesson was learned I am sure. As horrifying as this sounds...it happens more then you would think. I have a wonderful little female who is the sweetest and most caring mom you could want. She loves her pups, and actually seems to grieve when they are eventually placed in their new homes. But this same sweet great mother would kill pups from one of my other girls if she ever got the chance. Once she gets wind of another litter in the house, that's all she thinks about until the pups are about 10 weeks old. Then for whatever reason...she loses interest in them. There is NO DOUBT in my mind that her intent is to kill if she ever got a hold of one of them. |

I agree. :) |
wow, I am so sorry....having pups I feel her pain...I am so glad I schlepp them all to the vets with mom in tow too. mom gets pretty upset when even the vet holds them. |
