heat cycle questions.... Good morning, I am brand new here and I have a few questions about the heat cycle in Yorkies. I have been tracking my girls heat since they started (she is 2.5 yrs. old) and I am at the point of her first breeding. We have the vets approval although no blood testing has been done. 6 days ago I gave her a bath and she had yet to show any signs of her cycle coming on. Later that day she was slightly swollen indicating to me that she was beginning her cycle soon. (which was 6 mos. and 5 days since her last cycle) I have checked her daily to notice any change and so far nothing. Like I said it has been 6 days since the swelling began. My question is this: Is the swelling the beginning of her cycle or the blood appearing the beginning of her cycle? I have been all around in books and searching the web and there is contradicting information. (or just plain unclear information) I also am curious as to opinions on the best time from the start of bleeding to go see our little stud. I have heard very contradicting info on this too. Thanks in advance, I assume I should see blood very soon becasue this is 6 days into swelling without any sign of blood. Any other advice would be appreciated. I am looking forward to hear new and educated opinions on this topic. -Melissa |
I think most people consider the first sign of blood the start of the heat cycle. Some females bleed a lot less than others and some females also keep themselves very clean so it could be easy to miss the first day or so of a heat cycle. I usually like to introduce the female to the male on the 9th day from the first sign of blood. Some females are ready at that point and some are not. I have had some females not accept a male until the 11th or 12th day of their heat cycle. |
I always considered bleeding to be considered as the 'start.' I had progesterone testing done to determine when the most fertile days are for mine. I did notice one thing though...you say that you have not had any blood test done...what kind of testing have you had done? I'm just saying, make sure that if you've been putting any of that off, you have it done and results back first. :) Oh yeah, and welcome to YT! |
Bamafan.... The only thing I have done is see the vet a few times regarding her tolerance to be bred. My main concern at that point was to make sure she was healthy and structurally able to carry and deliver pups with no foreseen reason she could not tolerate that. If he indicated ANY reason why it may be hard for her I would have scrapped the idea. He checked her body out and together we decided she was a beautiful dog for breeding. Although I may choose not to test for what your talking about, I don't mind hearing about what you believe is the way to go about this. Like I said, my vet checked her out structurally. (Thanks for the welcome) |
