Retired stud question. My register male(Tom Pouce) is now over a year old and just mate with one of my female. So I am going to do the right thing and retired my other male because he isn't register(no paper) . It was my first experience with 2 stud competing for a female. I knew I would have to keep the two males separated and also keep the female apart to controlled the breedings and possible fight. That is ok. But Teddy took it really bad, crying none stop, refusing food, lost weigh too. He usually not that bad when my females are on heat even when he don't get to mate with them? Maybe having competition around make him more nervous or something? It was hart breaking to see him like that for 2 weeks... He spend a few days at my friend's house but he start marking  so i when to pick him up, :embarasse all embarrassed after 2 days... Ok so here is my question: Is Teddy will be better after he get neuter.Or will he always be so miserable when my female get into heat and keep all his stud behavior? I really love my Teddy boy... I would like to keep him as a pet only dog... but I want to best for him too. What are your experiences with retired stud? |
I can't answer this for you, but would be very interested to hear what others have to say as I am wanting to do the same thing. Retire my male and have him neutered but keep his as a pet. |
I'm not sure, but I think they still get upset after they are neutered. Maybe someone will correct me. |
I used to breed Min. Schnauzers years ago. I had 2 studs from very good lines. It was also a chore to keep them separated. I did end up neutering my oldest male. It did settle him down BUT, he still did have urges when my girls came in heat. It's not just about procreation to them but it is also about the alpha male. I hope this helps! |
i wouldn't neuter him. The behavior is there and probably won't go away. |
I used to think it was wise to neuter male dogs not being used for breeding but after reading about the pros and cons in the following article I have my doubts now. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf If he is neutered you won't have to worry about any unplanned pregnancies but if you neuter him then you increase his risk of developing other health problems. Even if you neuter him he will probably still try to breed. I know it is tough decision. You might ask your vet what he recommends. |

I always had doubts, for males, but went with the majority thinking. |

Lot's of information... I think I'll have to read it a few times. At a glance, I'm not sure it supported my original thinking. I'll be sharing this with people I come across struggling with spaying/neuter. |
I think he might still have some of the stud habits, but i don't think they will be as strong, or that he'll have the super strong drive that he MUST breed. The testosterone will be gone so he shouldn't feel the strong need to breed. Interesting article for sure and something to think about I guess. BUT, I wouldn't want my male to have to go through the mental issues your having, everytime the female goes into heat. If you just breed once a yr mabey you can deal with it. You could print out the article and bring it into your vet to see what they say. If it were me, I would neuter him. I am going to neuter my old stud very soon, and am not worried about it( except for the normal worry of surgery). |
From what I have read from others with neutered males that are around females in heat, they still have the desire to breed and will still tie the female. I think each male is different. Some unaltered male dogs never have the desire to breed (duds) and other just go crazy every time a female is in heat. |

Thanks for that link ! great info. I got 3 females so it is going to be very hard for him if I don't do something about it. Thanks all for you reply,I am going to keep on doing some more research to take the right decision. |
