Selling sperm???? Ok guys, I need some advice here. I just bought a little male from a lady. He is amazing and beautiful. He is 4 1/2 years old and 3 1/2 lbs. Perfect stud. The guy NEVER barks!! Can you believe that! Anyway, getting to my point. She emails me today and asks me if I can overnight his sperm because she was scammed on the male she was going to buy to replace him and she has a girl in heat. I have studed out one of my males before, but never AI'd any or had sperm collected to ship. I am not opposed to this, but have never done it, and have no idea what to charge for this. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks! Jill |
I don't but I know there are some knowledgable people on this subject as I discovered in the YT chatroom last year... probably one of the funniest conversations I ever had. Maybe Peanut was there? I know for sure Deb was but she's in the process of moving house. |

Oh I sure don't want to be the one collecting it!! :p |
The AI part is easy. it's the shipping that is very tricky and has to be done a special way. Prestigous, Deanna, knows all about it I think. i saw her posting on another forum about it. |
Note to self: Maybe yorkie talk isn't best when read while eating breakfast. . . Anyways, now I am curious. Best of luck to you! |
probably not this topic Yeah, I would probably steer clear of reading about sperm during breakfast, lunch or dinner. haha!!;) |
maybe you can find a vet that will help you. my vet specializes in reproduction and they do that. hope this helps oh and i was eating breakfast, but not now hahahaha..... renae |
I believe the sperm has to be sent (with appropriate paperwork) by your vet to her vet. You can go to the AKC website and find out about it there - if indeed we are talking AKC. Here's the link: Artificial Insemination |
I believe Sookie is correct about the vet to vet collection/shipment of semen. I asked my vet about it some time back and the collection isn't the problem - it's the storage cryogenics and the shipping that can be really tricky. I guess you could have your vet collect and pack it in dry ice and ship and hope for the best. |

Cindy, she would need to do the "fresh extended semen". Fresh semen requires both the dam and sire to be present at the time of extraction. "Fresh extended semen is processed in a similar way to frozen in that a ‘medium’ is used which protects and nourishes the sperm cells in transit. However, the freezing is avoided, thus assuring in most cases an over 40% better number of live and motile sperm cells." |

www.Camelot Farms.com has the kits needed for collection. Also the boxes and extender to ship it. Collection is easy. Take small sandwich bag(if it has the ziploc on it cut it off). Place bag over penis and gently rub penis until it becomes engorged. He will try to place his leg over your hand. Allow him to do this as it is the natural way they do they do with females. Make sure you don't lose the baggie when or after he has ejaculated. This is for collecting. Not hard but hands on if you know what I mean. Good luck, Sue |
Thanks!!! Thanks for everyone's input....I will certainly know what to do next time. This time it was a bit too late. My vet or none in the vacinity(we are not near a big city) have the collection units to do this. They will collect & test, but don't carry the shipping bottle, and from what I understand it needs to be a certain bottle. I appreciate all of your help and wisdom and will certainly keep this thread bookmarked for future reference. Have a wonderful weekend! Jill Brooks |
Do we have anyone experienced in collecting and shipping semen? I’m isolated in Hawaii, not a lot of options for stud out here. I’m trying to plan my female’s next heat. |
