Puppy worming and vaccines My vet said we should begin worming the puppies at 3 weeks old and then their vaccines at 6 weeks and then start sending them to their new homes around 7 weeks or so. When I said that I intend to keep them until around 12 weeks, he said that is a bad idea because the pups will be more oriented and attached to dogs then to people. I just wondered what everyone thought about this. I know I got both my dogs after 12 weeks and they are both very lovable and attached to our family. Any advice would be appreciated. My recommendation is to not do first vaccinations until the pups are at least 8 weeks old. If the puppies are very tiny then wait longer. I never give mine the lepto shot. My vet does not recommend worming unless the puppies check positive for worms. Unless you have had problems with hook worms in your adults then I would not just automatically worm the pups that young. As for age of selling the pups, many people recommend waiting until they are 12 weeks old but some people sell them younger. I feel that people should never sell them before 8 weeks but to me for pets I think the ideal age is 9 to 10 weeks. Everyone has different opinions on these subjects so I am just letting you know what I do and what I recommend. |
