Need some advise!! Hi, i am new to this so please bear with me. I have two yorkies, Rocko is my 3 yr old boy and ko ko is my 1 yr old girl. She weighs 4.4 lbs and he weighs 5.3 lbs. Is it safe for them to breed? She came is to heat,( i am keeping them separated). If not i plan to get her fixed. Any advise would be great thanks... |
If you have to ask that question, then no it is not safe for her to breed. In all honesty, the size of the female and male alone do not determine if it is safe. You have to take into account the other dogs within their lines. Given her size alone, she is a bit on the small side...most breeders draw the line at 5 lbs being the minimum 'safe' breeding size, and even then her pelvic structure plays an important role too. Breeding in a safe, responsible manner takes a lot of research and learning under the trained eye of a good mentor. If you desire to breed, that would be the best place to start. |
:yeahthat: Research and YT is a great place to start. Welcome. |
If she is only one year old, I would wait until she is two years old to make that decision. Don't let them breed now, in my opinion she is too small and too young to be a mommy. But, she may continue to grow and fill out to be over 5 lbs., and then I'd ask my vet to take a look at her and see what the vet says. Of course, this is only the physical safety issue -- whether these dogs should be bred involves other questions as well. I agree with the other poster, this is a great place to start researching. Good luck. |
