Help with weaning please. Molly's boys are 6 weeks old and she is starting to wean them. I've been giving them goat's milk a couple of times a day and just started giving them either softened kibble or canned food with some goat's milk in it. My question is this...how long can I safely leave the soft food out in their playpen? It seems like I'm forever throwing away food but I don't want to leave it out too long. Also, what about at night time? They aren't eating hard food yet because they don't all have their back teeth yet so if Molly isn't in there they won't have anything available. Do you feed your weaning puppies on a schedule? If so, how often do you feed? |

I homecook for my guys and the pups have been exposed to Scarlett's food for about three weeks now. I feed the adult dogs twice a day and of course the pups eat with Scarlett. The pups also get two extra meals one mid-day and a late night snack. They are still nursing a bit in between but they aren't getting much in the way of milk. I want to add that I do give Scarlett and kids a bit of extra protein and calcium rich foods plus everyone gets a vitamin supplement. PrissyBelle and Beauregard are BIG EATERS during the day and sleep through the night so I don't worry about nighttime feedings. |
They sleep all night huh? That sounds wonderful! LOL! |
I introduce mine to ground up dry food at around 4 weeks, as soon as the puppies are able to start walking. I put Chicken Soup dry puppy food in a blender and grind it until it is very fine. I put this ground dry food in a bowl in the x-pen with the pups along with a bowl of water. The puppies will go over and start licking the dry food. As the puppies get older they will start eating more and more of the dry food and mom will slowly dry up. Usually by 8 weeks the pups are nursing very little. All my moms have always had plenty of milk so I never felt it was necessary to make the mush. Some breeder prefer to wean them on mush. Either method will work but I have found the dry food method works best for me and it is a lot less messy. |

I don't hae any answers on how many times a day/night to feed but I would guess that canned is the same as homecooked. Once opened, it shouldn't sit out for more than one hour or it becomes too susceptible to bacteria. |
In the beginning I grind it in a blender until it is a find powder. They just lick it and I have never had any choking. As they get older and get teeth then I start leaving chunks in it. I know of lots of other breeders that use this same method and they have great success with it. I like to use those small double bowls that they sell at Wal-mart. I will put the ground of food in both sides of the bowl and I will use another small double bowl for the water. |
