random I'm no where near a breeder, but someone told me yeeeeeears ago that however many nipples that is on a female dog is up to how many pups she can have. So basically if a female dog has 6 nipples they can have up to 6 puppies. Is this true? I was just wondering. |
Hmm I don't know, but now I want to know too! :) |
I am not a breeder, but I have heard many stories of females having more puppies than teets. So, I don't think that is entirely true. |
I would say that the number of nipples has nothing to do with how many pup they can have. All the dogs I have every owned have had 8 to 10 nipples but I am sure there are exceptions. I have had litters from 1 to 7 puppies. My larger females (around 7 to 9 lbs) usually have the larger litters. I know in larger breeds of dogs the females can have 12 or more pups and they don't have that many nipples. |

I have had bitches with 8 nipples have 1 puppy 2 times in a row. I have also had a bitch have 8 pups...who only had 8 nipples. Litter size is determined by how many eggs are produced by the female in season. And not how many nipples she has. :D |
hmmm.... interesting!! :D |
Thanks everyone for answering the question without laughing at me! lol Someone had told me that when I was a little girl and it stuck with me, so I figured I would ask some breeders. |
Years ago, my husband's Pointer had 16 puppies in one litter :eek Poor girl, she separated them and would go back and forth from one bed to the other taking care of them. Her one and only litter, she was spayed after that! |
Hi Random. This is my first time on this forum. I would like to say hi. :thumbdown I hate to rain on your parade, but, one of my yorkies just had her first litter on Dec 23rd by c-sec and it was just one pup. She will b 3yrs. old on April 15th. She has 10 nipples. So that is just a myth. take care and i hope to talk 2 u soon. :):animal36 |
Ha I thought that all dogs had 10 niples?! To me this is like saying "cows have 2-4 niples" What? No all cows have 4! (or so i think :D LOL all confused now :confuse2:) Anyways.. Like the others have said - the number of niples have nothing to do with the number of pups in a litter |

I believe that is a old wives tale (why do they call them that  ). Recently a dalmatin gave birth to 18 pups and many large breeds routinely have more pups than nipples. Thank you for a good thought provoking question. |

Both of my dogs has 10 niples. I never thought they could have more... or less.. :scratchhe - unless it was a genetic mutation.. How many niples does a (normal :p) wolf have? Wouldn't it be interesting if domestic dogs has evolved from the wolf? - in the number of niples ;) |
Not true. There are some dogs who have had in the upper teens as far as number of puppies in a litter. Also, apply that same logic to humans...triplets, quad, and more. Doesn't work. |
