mara's temp is low mara had 4 girls on the 11th, we could not get the first one out, so we rushed to the vet and although she was alive, she did not make it..two girls were born right away, then we waited 4 hours at the vet.. they could not feel what was going on, so did an xray.. it showed the baby came down one horn and began to go up the other.. a c section was done but baby did not make it.. Mara on monday night was showing signs things were not ok.. so tuesday we went to the vet... her temp was 100.9 and she was given fluids and her temp went up to 102.9 right away... the next day she had to have more fluids.. she has been offered whelping pudding and does not want it.. she eats a bit of puppy food with ceaser.. ya not good but will take it.. and not much at one time.. I have given her yogart, cottage cheese,. even water she is still taking it from a syringe from me.. right now I saw her panting again.. it is not over hot at this time.. and her temp is back down to 100.5 should I be worried right now.. any breeders online... I can take her to the vet again possibly for more fluids in the am... anne mara's temp is down again to 100.5 that is what it was when they gave her fluids.. as soon as they did, he went back up right away to 102.9 should I be worried.. I think I am going to take her back in for fluids again in the morning.. I hate to think of her going backwards again.. I can hardly sleep at nights... anne |
I guess no one is on with any knowledge.. for there have been lookers but not one post..grrrrrrrrrr anne |
Anne, how frustrating that is. I don't know what could be causing this. |
Aw, poor little girl!! I would take her back in to the vet, always best to be on the safe side. It sounds like she may have an infection that she could have gotten from a puppy or from having the c-section. The low temperature, panting, and low fluids sounds like an infection which isn't that uncommon when a c-section or spay is done. I would talk it over with your vet, she may need some medication to fight off the infection if that is what is going on. There is obviously something going on with her. Since you are already syringe feeding her water, try pedialyte instead. It will help hydrate her better and help her electrolytes. Plus they usually like the taste of it. I hope you and your vet can figure it out and she starts feeling better soon!! |

Pedialite is a fluid made for babies (human) that is similar to Gatorade. You can get it in any drug store or most grocery stores. |

I am not understanding this.. for I have had her to the vets to get tails docked.. and then was taken in on tuesday and wednesday and was given fluids.. although the vet said she did not want her to get infection.. I know fluids are a best friend right now..yet now again it is all starting over again... same symptoms as she had when I took her to the vet first time for fluids.. anne |
Sorry to hear your girl is having such a rough go. I have no experience with c-sections so can't be of much help there but I do hope for the best for Mara and her babies. If you can't keep her hydrated orally, you may want to sub-q some fluids into her. My vet gave me a bottle of 0.9 % sodium chloride injection solution for some pups my Bonnie had back in October that weren't thriving. You're probably right in your thinking that it's an infection but she has to stay well hydrated to produce her milk. Best of luck. |
Yes, the panting isn't normal since it's already been over a week since she had the babies. At this point, you'd have to consider that she's in distress and the cause needs to be found. Gosh, I hope she bounces back for you soon or you'll have babies going downhill on you. That's why I'm on so late. I'm having to supplement a little boy that was born Sunday and isn't thriving so I'm living on naps for now and hanging out on the computer. The Pedialite should help Mara, at least in the short term until you can see the vet. A little Nutri-cal wouldn't hurt either. |

she has had this twice tues and wednesday but I do not know how to do it.. well I do now but the vet did not offer me to take some home.. if I get this pedialite.. I guess all I can do is give it to her with a syringe.. for right now she will not let me give her water.. r u saying this will make her want more.. and how long will this take to make me see a change.. I will wake my hubby up to go now to get some... anne |

Jim is getting orange.. he is on his way home.. her temp is still 100.9 and she is not wanting to stay in with babies.. like she is telling me something.. the same as the other day when I took her in for fluids... so I am going to try this tonight... and be at the vets at 9 am.. thanks for your help.... anne |
Hopefully that will help her out until you get her in to the vet's. Best wishes for you all, especially Mara and those little ones. And Jim sounds like a great guy, going out so late to the store. Ahh, the things we do for our little ones...take care. |

Any amount is good but 12cc isn't really a lot so if you could get some more in her it would be good. Maybe give her a few minutes break if she's getting too squirmy to take it. Maybe she would take some meat; that would be good too. Honestly, she may be doing poorly from an infection or something, but her lack of eating and drinking is probably causing her most immediate problem. From the way you described her behavior and condition, the more food of any type you can get in her the better. Even though a lot of people don't think it's good to give them, mine never turn down a piece of ham. A weak mom is not good so I would try anything, at least in the short term. |
Was awake till 4 a.m.. woke jim up at 3 am to go to the drug store and get me some pedialyte, gave her some of this.. she went down hill fast again.. so I went to bed for a couple hours and jim sat with her.. then we went to the vet!!!! Just got back from the vet.. I was up till 4 am.. woke jim up at 3am and he went and got me some pydiealit.. not spelled right.. got up and went to the vet... She was given more fluids.. blood work showed she is enimic and was given antibiotics, and sucralfrate 1gm, vit b121 shot, vit k shot, fecal exam showed positive for blood.. potassium chloridae injection 20 meg She is not cooperating with me much.. her blood is low but shows she is making new blood but needs beef the vet said.. so will get some beef liver to give her if we have to grind it up... I have been saying all along something was not right.. vet does not work on sunday but says she is going to call me in the afternoon tomorrow... Said something about an ulcer... not sure what she meant.. I did not get fluids from her.. but I know how to do it now.. she says she does not think I can do it.. what they do not get is that I can tube feed a baby and did and have... so I can do anything if it is a must...and many breeders do not tube feed..jim is going to get beef liver for me also... will grind it up and put it in some food for her... woogieman thanks so very much for your help, pm's and just being online in the middle of the night... anne anne |
Anne, you might want to try this recipe. It is given to Moms after delivering when they won't eat and drink Post Whelping Pudding 16 oz. water 1 pkg. Knox Gelatin (micro. to disolve) 15 oz. can evap. milk 2 tabls. vanilla yogurt 2 egg yolks 2 tabls. white corn syrup mix all ingred. in bowl let set in fridge until thickens. Spoon out as needed. |

I am a bit confused about the concern about her temperature being around 100 degrees. Most all of my yorkies have normal temperature between 100 and 102. Anything over 102.5 or below 99 I would be concerned with. If she is not eating then her blood sugar would drop and her temperature would run a little lower. Do you have any Nutri-cal? Is she producing much milk. If she is not eating then her milk production will be greatly reduced. I get a product from Revival called K-9 Bluelite and I always have it on hand for occasions when I have one not eating or drinking. It is a buffered, electrolyte/vitamin/mineral/multiple energy, rehydration supplement for dogs. It is a powder and just costs $9.99 for two pounds. You just add a little to the drinking water or you can give it with a syringe if they are not drinking on their own. I highly recommend you keep it in stock, it is much better than the pedialyte. Are the pups still nursing mom? If the pups are a week old then mom will not want to be with them all the time. Panting is perfectly normal for the first couple of weeks because they are producing milk. If I get a momma that does not eat well after delivering then I hand feed them. I do not like to drastically change their diet because that can cause more problems. I do add canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food to their dry food and sometimes I will boil some eggs and add that to their food. I also give them Nutri-cal a few times a day plus their calcium supplement. I make sure they eat about 4 times a day. If you don't have any Nutri-cal you can give a little Karo syrup and water. I pray your little momma starts feeling better soon. I know you are worried. |

Her calcium was up ok.. but with not drinking she was getting low on milk. that with fluids has of course helped her.. she was given a vitiman k shot, sucralfate, potassium chloride injection, I was given sucralfate med and amoxi-drops...we are also giving her pedialyte often which was suggested to me. As for her temp when she reached 100. for her the vet thought it was low.. as soon as fluids were injected her temp rose 2 degree... We have cooked liver today and given her some with her food.. Babies at this time are thriving.. but we are having a hard time getting fluids into her and so far with a 3 cc syringe... anne |
anne i am so sorry i went threw this with a bitch i had and i started giving fluids at home we finally put an iv in and in 2 days she was back to pretty much normal she just really needed to be rehydrated subqu was not enough we brought her home with the iv in and just made sure she did not crimp the line or pull it out he also added vitiam b and c to the iv will your vet not do this |
