C-section hello!! this is my first post but i have been on here awhile reading and learning a lot!! i have a 2yr old yorkie who's name is izzy. i paid alot of money for her and drove 8 hrs one way to get her when she was 12wks old! well i wanted to breed her one time since she is such a beautiful and well mannered dog so i researched alot and decided to breed her!! she is 4.5lbs and the stud was 4.6lbs so i thought well great!! she is now 56 days and went and had the x-rays today well the vet said there was 2. i looked at the x-rays and saw 2 as well but the vet said they was long but that might not be a problem until i told him that the 62 days is on x-mas eve and the 63 days is x-mas. so then he said if she did have any problems whelping then they would not have a full staff to assist in the c-section and i would have to drive an hour away to an emergency vet. so i decided to schedule her a c-section on monday at 8a.m. so i dont know if he suggested a c-section b/c they was to long and 2 big for her to have natural(he did not measure the skulls or izzy) or if he was just scared she would go into labor during x-mas and there would be a problem and i would have to drive far away! i do not want to let her free whelp on x-mas and one get stuck in the birth canal and i have to drive 1 hr away that is way to risky. BUT again i dont want to put her threw a c-section if it is not needed!!!! and another thing makes me think he was just concerened about them not havin any staff available was-- i asked him what if she goes into labor this weekend should i bring her in or just see how she does. he said i could let her try b/c they would have the staff this weekend!!! what do you guys think?? sorry for such a long post but i just dont know what to do!!! oh this is her first litter!! thank you so much |
There was just a thread about pre-scheduling c-sections and what I go out of it is experienced breeders nor their vets would do this. How do you know when to count from? The day she tied and the day that she actually became pregnant can be different... You could risk taking the pups too soon and them not making it. Do you have someone you can stay with by a fully staffed vet that day? Izzy may be uncomfortable with that though. What does the vet mean there won't be a full staff? It is abdomen surgery. All that is needed is one vet and one tech and maybe a couple other techs/assistants to help the pups I would think. |
she was artifically insemenated(spelling) on oct 24!! the stud couldnt quite hit the right spot!! we had all her tests done(ovulation) and tried to let them again but still no success.. bless their little hearts they tried!lol. i really dont understand the staff thing either. BUT agian i dont know how many it takes to operate. AND i really dont see a problem if they are long! does anyone know -? just b/c there is only 2 puppies one in each uterine horn would that make the puppies big or long??? i mean the vet acted like if she had 3 or 4 puppies in her they would not be as big because the wouldnt have the room to get as big and long.. does that even make any sense?? i dont know i live in a very small town so maybe the vet is just tryin to be safe by doin a c-section!! but i swear her belly is not that big at all. she has gained a little over a lb now!!! |
This is a real tough one because she is quite small, but the vet should be able to determine by the x-rays if the puppies look too big already. I just don't like the idea of scheduling a c-section. A c-section is NEVER desirable if it can be prevented. You might want to have him x-ray her again as she gets closer. If they still don't look too big to deliver, she may probably be fine. It seems they never go in heat at the right time to prevent delivering on a holiday or a weekend. She may go later than you expect as well. another x-ray before Christmas eve would be a whole lot cheaper than travelling to an emergency vet. and it will give you peace of mind to know if it still looks like she can whelp naturally. You do need to prepare to travel on Christmas tho just in case. |
I think you are taking a very big risk of loosing the puppies by doing a c-section that early. You really don't know when the pups were conceived since the sperm can live 5 days or longer. Your females eggs could have been fertilized several days after the breeding. I pray everything works out. Please keep us posted. |
I wouldn't do a section on Monday unless she was in labor. I did a scheduled section with a singleton puppy and it was too early and we were lucky she made it. I agree with doing another x-ray closer to Christmas. When it's a section it's hard to tell if the time is right unless she shows signs of labor. Did they tell you to check her temp to see if it stays down of give you any other signs to watch for? |
My girl was bred on the 24th of Oct and because of the holidays our vet is scheduling a csection on Friday (day after Christmas). The big difference is that IF she goes early they are willing to come in even if they are closed IF I scheduled the appt. I think Monday is WAY too early for your girl. Can't they do it closer? Christmas Eve at least?? |
no they didnt tell me to watch for anything but i will start takin her temp tomorrow as it will be 57 days!! i agree about them doin a section and the puppies not bein ok!! i just dont know what to do.. lets say i wait till she goes into labor and its on x-mas and if it there is any complications or whatever i will not get her to the emergency vet fast enough since it will be a hour away!! this is such a hard decision to make..it seems ur da_n if u do and da_n if u dont!lol.. i am gonna try and post these x-rays and let u all see!!! please tell me what u think!!! thanks for all the great input.. it is such a hard decision!!! |

you know now that i think about it i think he said they will be open half a day on x-mas eve! he told me that if i decide to let her whelp naturally that he would be on call but they dont have alot of staff that would come in an x-mas eve or x-mas day! i live in a real small town so there is only like 2 dr in this vet. is a couple of days gonna make that bit of a difference????? i understand about oct 24 dont necessarly mean she concieved on that day! i just want what is best for my babies!! thank you so much i will ask and see what they say!! |
A couple of days can make a HUGE difference! In the last week those puppies are developing a LOT! If it was me I would really ask if they can do it on Christmas Eve. You might have to help, but that is wonderful! I will be in there the whole time for my girl. The vet just needs a couple people to help him out. Ours usually will do one person for each pup (I get a pup started too) and one to help him with what he needs until she is all sewed up. :) Let us know how it goes!! |
