X-ray or Ultrasound for Mom? I have a pregnant furbaby and this is going to be her second litter. With her first litter I had my mom do an ultrasound on her so we could find out home many puppies she had. It was an AMAZING experience seeing the little babies inside of her moving around! I recently moved 8 hours away from my family so I can't have my mom do the ultrasound again. I hear people have x-rays done on their pregnant yorkies...... but is it safe? I thought people werent supposed to have or be around x-rays when they are pregnant. Is that true for dogs too? I obviously need to know how many babies are in the oven so I am wondering if I should do and ultrasound or is it safe to do and x-ray? And if I do do an x-ray, how far along should she be before I have it done? Thanks in advance for all of your Wonderful help! |
It is my understanding that xrays are done quite often. Momma should be 45 days along, I believe, for the babies to show on the xray. At this point, their bones are calcified enough to show up. |
Great! Thank you very much! :) |
Mine have xrays done between 55-58 days |
I get ultrasounds on all mine at 45 days. Never had a problem. Besides wanting to know how many babies they will have, also want to make sure the babies aren't to big for mom. This way I have an idea if they need a c-section or not. |
I generally xray mom between day 50 and 55. I like to be sure that the skeletons have had plenty of time to develop. I used to jump the gun and do xrays between day 45 and 50 but skulls and spines were harder to count. |
Great advice! Thank you very much! I will probably wait until around 55 days just to be on the safe side. Thank you! |
I had xrays done on my female at what we thought was day 56; turns out she had the pups just two days later; a week before they were due! Four pups seen in the xray.....four puppies whelped; all healthy. |
I do ultrasound around Day 40. We do xrays about Day 60 to see if mom can deliver or if a c-section is probable. |
