Puppy hernia
 

OK:cry: took the lil girls to the vet Monday, all got shots and dewormer. But the vet noticed that one of the babies has a hernia. It is in her groin area. He said it may heal on it's on or she may have to have surgery later. Needless to say she is "Not For Sale" and we will be keeping the lil angel and having her spayed. My question is has this happened to any of your puppies?I read about it. It's called an "inguinal hernia". She is active as can be and just a joy! Would appreciate any insight on this. I have so much respect of your opinions. Please help me out here. I was going to post this earlier this week but wanted to research it first.

bumping this for you, what I know and have heard about them, they can be fixed and be fine and great, just spay her before you sell her.:)

We had a puppy with a hernia and planned on keeping her to make sure she was OK.

Someone came to see another puppy and fell in love with her. The woman was a nurse and wanted little Bindi so much we did a contract saying at 6 months her would spay her and have the hernia repaired. When she was spayed the vet said the hernia was closed. She sent me the spay certificate and a letter from the vet and I sent the AKC papers to her.

The person brings her to the puppy BBQ's I have and they renamed her Mindy. She is a pretty two year old now and very healthy.

I had a female pup born last year that I had to pull when she was born.
I think I pulled a little to hard and caused the inguinal hernia.
She went in for her first puppy shot they found it and by the time she had her last puppy shot done, it was gone.

A small inguinal hernia is not a major concern.
They are more common in female then males.
Most will heal up on there own or they can be repaired when pup is spayed.

If it’s large tear then it needs to be watched closely.
If left protruding it can cause strangulation to the bowels.

The puppy I had gotten almost 4 weeks ago has a inguinal and umbilical hernia and he is doing just great!!.It hasnt slowed him down one bit.;) His inguinal hernia is quite big, the bigger the hernia is the less prone it is to get stranguled. Tuckers pops in and out all day long and most of the time I leave it alone. If he is playing hard or stresses out it gets huge but we slowly massage it back in. As long as it stays soft and doesnt cause any pain when you touch it, its fine. He will have his operated on in a few weeks when we have him fixed.
His umblicial one is very small and is healing on its own. :D
I have done a ton of research about this and was also told by my vet that ingunial hernias are genetic. Umbilical ones are usually the result of the mom pulling on the cord to hard, happens more with first time moms, which was the case with my puppy.
If you continue to breed those parents then you may end up with a pup with a ingunial hernia in every litter.
I also wanted to ask, why wont you sell that pup? I still choose to get my pup even though I knew he had issues, the breeder offered to cover the cost of the surgery to have his hernia's repaired. You could do the same thing or you could sell the pup after its fixed.

Thanks for your replies. I have been reading alot about this, I guess it freaked me out a bit, now I know that isn't as big a deal as I thought. I feel better about it now. You guys are the best! We go back to the vet on the 27th. It doesn't slow her down. Not for a second!

This isn't a reply i guess, but just made me think. I bought my girlfriend from a breeder here in nebraska. I seen her on a website and the pup was too cheap to pass by. But I noticed she had like 50 other pups listed too. When I got to her house it was terrible. there were buildings outside everywhere with cages that had doors to inside the building.. Biggest puppy mill i have ever seen. Anyway, when I went to see the dog she had two left. One was smaller and had a hernia. She told me it wasn't a big deal and didn't hurt the dog. She also said the dog looked kinda like a shih tzu and that she might sell it as one..Lol.. omg. Then I see it listed today for a hundred dollars more than the one I bought, and it says nothing about the hernia! that's a law suit waiting to happen...

I was pretty freaked out too. The person we got Tucker from was friends of ours so we watch this little guy grow up and when she called me to tell the news about his hernia, I was heartbroken and didnt know what to do. I talked to my vet, the vet that saw the puppy, did a ton of research and posted about it on here. I got great advice from everyone, I felt better and decided to take him anyways. Im so glad I did, He is such a good little guy. Im sure your little girl will do just fine. :)

HAHA I just realized I said I bought my girlfriend from a breeder.. I'm dying laughing. I meant I bought her a puppy from a breeder.. :)

haha.. I caught that too and was just going to laugh about it and tease you about it. lol.. Just don't let her see it!

Hi guys, I know this is an older thread, but I am wondering on an umbilcal hernia is there ANY truth that it can be the result of not taking your puppies to the bathroom while you sleep at night??? I read this online and it flipped me out! My babies are being fixed and my BOY (they said girls are more common than boys too) is getting his little umbilical hernia corrected. I AM SO STRESSED

Also, is this something that I should let the breeder know? I also read that it can be from the way they are delivered? HELP!
