A week Early :aimeeyorkHi everyone new to this so bear with me lol my yorkie lexi had a puppy on friday afternoon was not meant to be born till next friday (12/12/08) the puppy looks great8 but i was a bit surprised there is only 1 is this normal for a first litter? i weighed the puppy it is 2oz! is this the norm for a week prem pup! any help would be appreciated :D :D |
Oh gosh. A weeks is HUGE when it comes to whelping early. 2 ounces is so tiny. Keep weighing the pup to see if it gains weight. Slow but sure is fine as long as it is gaining. Even though it is a preemie, it should be very active. It it squirmy, moving around, and nursing well? One pup is normal at all times. I pray your little one thrives and lives a long and healthy life. PLEASE PLEASE update us as I will be worried about the little baby. |
Oh good, you are on YT right now. Please let me know how the pup is:) |
Congratulations on your little singleton! Having just one pup has nothing to do with it being a first litter. The female does predict the number of pups and the male is the factor in the sexes of them. It has more to do with the parent's heredity and not how many litters they've whelped. Two ounces is pretty small for a yorkie and even more so for a singleton. This is likely due to it being born a week early. Agreeing with Julz, keep a close eye on the pup, especially the first few days....week. Weigh it more than once a day to be sure it is gaining weight and more importantly not losing any. Make sure it is active, nursing, having a full belly, and kept warm. Good luck to you and mama lexi and yes, please do keep us updated. |
Hi had little pup to vet today and she may have to get leg amputated wen she big enough! i think the pup came out breech and my lexi bit its foot trying to open the sac? she has no toes so the skin may just grow over and she'l be fine if not she will just have 3 legs! so worryin times ahead  |
That can happen so easily. It is amazing that it doesn't happen more often when you see them chewing the cord. I can't see why the leg would need amputated though unless gangreen set in or the leg was deformed in such a way that it was a hazard to the pup. Are you going to post pictures? Did the vet say other than that the pup was doing great? |
im not sure how to post pics ?? yea the amputation a last resort i think he has given her anti-biotic just now and is goin to see her again! she was the star attraction at the vets lol every1 wanted to see her! how do i post pics?? |
after you take the picture and download it to your computer, you must resize it to be able to post on here. I use PIXRESIZER, a free download. There is an area under where you type messages that says "manage attachments". That is where you double click and then go find where you stored the pictures you want to upload from your computer. If you have any additional questions, just let me know and I'll help in any way I can:) |
ok ill try it 2moz gettin late here in Scotland!! ill let ya know if i get stuck ;) |

Awe, that is a nice, healthy looking little puppy you have there! I see the foot. Is the foot healing nicely? That pup doesn't look like a preemie at all, but instead, a nice little healthy chunky monkey:D |
had only one pup too. Hi my little girl just had her single pup 12:00am sat the 6th. she had had to have a c-section. your little one looks great;), she doen't look like she has any other breed in her. I do have to agree about her size she looks about the size of ours.:aimeeyork |
