New Mom Questions! Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum and am going to go visit the little boy who will possibly be the new addition in our family. This will be the first yorkie we have owned and we are very excited. This puppy is a couple days shy of 8 weeks and is already 2 pounds. The breeder guesses the puppy will grow to be around 6 pounds in its adulthood. This is the size we want. My question has to do with when we can bring him home. The breeder said we can't bring him home now because 8 weeks is too soon for him, but she thought 9 weeks should be fine. I saw another thread where peopel recommended 10-12 weeks, but it seemed that that was because of how tiny most of those puppies are. Since this puppy is already two pounds, should 9 weeks be okay? Also, his ears aren't poking straight up, at least from what i can tell in the one picture she sent us. Is this a bad sign of health problems? Or is this just an issue if he were going to be a showdog? I also read that you can groom them so that the ears stand up through taping. Please advise wonderfully wise yorkie parents! |
10-12 weeks is not only for their size it is reccomended for proper socialization, these things they learn from the mother and littermates.Ask the breeder is they wouldnt mind keeping the pup until at least the 10-12 week mark. Ears up are not significant ,it in no way affects their health my pups ears never seem to go up until 12-14 weeks. Write down a list of questions and bring them with you, check over the puppy ,the parents and their living conditions very carefully. Congratulations on deciding to add a yorkie to your family...they are truly the best! |
Thank you so much for that information. I am so eager to have this little boy home. Of course I want what's best for him though. Thank you! |

First, I want to say that I am not a breeder and by no means am I a yorkie expert. But I did have a situation similar to yours and I just wanted to tell you my experience. I brought my Bella home at 8 weeks and she was 2.2 lbs with cute little floppy ears. She has been SUPER healthy and she has perfect perky ears now at 7 months. She was already pee pee pad trained when I brought her home as well. She was very friendly and outgoing when I met her, but after she got all of her shots I continued to make sure that she was able to interact with lots of other pups and people. She has been great. I am definitely not saying that Bella's story is the norm, but everything has been great for me and my angel despite the fact that she came home at 8 weeks. If you choose to bring your baby home early, I would definitely make sure that the baby has a good health record, strong teeth, and that he is able to eat well...but considering that he's already 2lbs he will probably be fine. I would also make sure that he has been away from his mother for an extended period because it could definitely be a problem if he is taken away from her right before he goes to you. Bella had been separated from her mother for approx. 3 weeks when I picked her up. I hope this helps and good luck with your new baby. |
