NEED Breeder Advise for friend ! Crosspost from a friend of mine - The mom just had puppies a week ago - There is 3 puppies total....2 females - 1 male ....The male is the small one she is carrying aroung.....she asked this of breeders but as of this morning - we haven't had an answer - can someone offer some light on why this is happening ? Question: She doesn't want to stay in the box with the puppies anymore and she keeps carrying the smallest one everywhere....does their motherly instinct dissappear with time? |

I would try to reach Yorkie Rose and Wnalegria through their websites. Maybe even a phone call since this sounds like an emergency to me. Does this person have a mentor or a vet she can call although I am sure you have already thought of that? |
a nice update - The mom JUST fed the little one and is back in her box with the babies...the females sleep together from what I read and I guess the mommy is protecting the baby boy for some reason - but it would sure be nice to know why she keeps leaving her box with only the male....I guess when babies are a week old and SO tiny - we worry over every little thing - and this is our friends very 1st litter ....so yes...ANY advise is appreciated ! |
I'm not a breeder, so take this with a grain of salt. I know on the farm when a mother gives birth to a low-weight (runt) or sick kitten she will remove it from the litter and let it die. Does the mother refuse to feed it? Does she take it away from the litter and leave it somewhere else or just carry it around? I would have it checked by the vet to see if it's sick or just the runt. If it's just a runt the behavior might stop once the pup gets stronger and seems less weak. |

Could you post the original thread? If the mom is carrying the boy it may be because he has a problem that she can sense or it may be that there is too much hubbub around her whelping box and she wants to move them somewhere she feels more secure. It's important to watch this very closely, the pup or the others can get cold very quickly if left. Is this her first litter? She may be just confused. I would suggest confining her in an ex-pen with the whelping box at one end and food and drink for mom. Allow her out for potty breaks, but not with a pup in her mouth. She won't be able to get to far with him if confined, and may quit trying. Also, a heating pad placed halfway under the whelping box will keep the other kids warm if she's not staying in. I would probably bottle feed the boy every two hours to make sure he's getting enough and make sure there isn't excess bedding that she can bury him in. |

OOOPs, sorry, nix the question about first litter, I just saw that. and it IS normal for her not to stay in the box ALL the time, just popping in and out to nurse and clean them is what most do. This is why I like the heating pad under half. The pups will wiggle to the warm end if they are chilly and mom's on break. I'm fairly new to the bredding of Yorkies, but we (my mother) use to breed Standrard poodles. If the mom is signaling out the tiny boy, it is mostly becasue she thinks something is wrong. Every 2-3 hours is normal for mom to go in with them the first few weeks. If need be I would confine mom to an area to keep her with them or use a heating pad to keep their bodies warm when mom isn't around. Not every female is a good mother. Does he suck?? Your friend can always make mom lay down and make her feed him or she can do the bottle herself (mothers milk is best) Please keep us informed. And tell your friend good luck! |
hi, i just wanted to share my experience with this topic. my little yorkie courtney had a litter of pups in 2004. she had 4 girls and 1 boy. one female puppy was very small at birth, weighing appox. 2.8 oz. her siblings were all at about 3.9 oz. i immediatly started taking extra measures with the really small one. well, low and behold courtney started taking her from the whelp area in my kitchen and hiding her on the carpet between my recliner and the wall. she did this for about 4 days straight. i finally had to in-close her in the whelp area with the pups in a play yard. i couldnt figure it out. it was so odd. the puppy was thriving, and sucking and was gaining a little weight, when all of the sudden at 16 days old, she passed away for no known reason to me or my vet. so, i guess that mother's instinct can be for real. i had no reason to think the puppy wasnt gonna make it after she began eating good and gaining. but courtney did for some reason. so i guess you just never know. good luck to your friend and i hope all goes well for those babies. |
oh wow...I was hoping for better reasons for her to be carrying him around but she DOES need to hear this. Thank you so much for the replies and Sylvan - thank you for the offer - I'm directing her to this post so she can read your answers and it really sounds like she needs to keep a very very close eye on the little boy - So far the mom is feeding him and he can suck and is eating ....She does have a heating pad - and is really taking great care of her mom and the puppies...and the mom IS taking care of all her babies.... but these are the things I think you learn as you go - so she'll really appreciate the help here - thank you ! |
Anytime! Tell her to holler with any questions, we all had to start somewhere and I remember having my phone pretty much imbedded in my ear talking to my mentor every hour at first. |
