How long r there in heat for? And does anyone have any tips for a sucessful breeding x

Males don't go into heat...they are always ready. Be aware some really hard to break habits come with intact males. He'd make a much better pet if neutered.

What kind of hard habits....The reason I ask is that several people have asked me to stud Manolo out. I was thinking I would for people near me that I can check them out but if he is going to have bad habits I dont know....

Some males who are used as a stud live to breed and aren't much of a nice pet anymore. If left unneutered, marking can be a big issue. So it just could possibly be that you will lose your sweet little boy to one who always wants to get breed...

Depends on the male, but it is not uncommon for males that are used as stud to become territorial, even aggressive at times, or for them to begin to mark anything that will stand still in your house. Some experience pretty significant behavioral issues. One of my studs would pace and whine and pant and refuse to eat, either when one of the girls (who did not even live in the same house) was in heat or just sporatically for no reason. And the problems may be alleviated after neuter, maybe not. A stud's actions and overall behavioral is something that should be seriously considered when thinking about breeding...it can be a pretty serious set of consequences to take on and I wouldn't consider it "worth it" in a lot of instances.

There is also the trying to get out at all costs if a female in heat is anywhere close by. That can be very dangerous.

I also remember a story on here about a male who was seriously injured while being bred just one time. The woman doing it didn't know what she was doing and he hurt his back, I think.

I would seriously think twice. I know my Gizmo is sweet, but I want him to stay sweet. That's why we chose to have him neutered. :)

Wow that makes sense. He has breed with my female 2 times but thats it for her. The second time was an oops. It happened that fast. My Scottie snapped at Mnolo (because Lola was in heat) and Manolo fainted. I picked him up took his belly band off and went to get some ice turned around and the bugger got her..He does mark alot but is a loveable boy....I have a friend that asked if she could use him and it was the 10th day he mounted her once and did not want anything else to do with her...Maybe he is a one lady man.....smile Thanks for your help...Lissette

Judy, I do want to have Manolo Neutered, Bailey and Kirby are both neutered but it scares me so bad because he is so littlle and when I had his teeth cleaned it took him a week to get over that. He is tough but yet fragile and goes down quickly. So I just thought he would be good as a stud. Everyone stops me to see him and loves his color but as you know Im not a breeder. What would you do? And I do want him to stay sweet also...

Ultimately you know what's best, so I can only say what I would do. First, Gizmo has never been a tiny pup. He's always been hearty, and we've never had any issues with sugar.

That said, I would do some research on vets. I would find one in my area who has done a lot of neuters on toy breeds, and who will do the extra tests ahead of time.

I know that it's a tough decision, but it could make him healthier and you all happier in the long run. I have also read that it reduces the chances of some kinds of cancer, so it may even increase his life span.

After checking into all of that, I would go with my heart. I know what a tough decision it can be. :hug:
