New puppies - dock tail & dew claw I am a first time puppie grandma - Mercedes had 4 puppies - one girl & 3 boys on November 15th - My Vet does not dock tails or dew claws - Can I use the Rubber binder method?? and how do I remove the dew claw?? |
You're way too late. Tails and dew claws should be done the 3rd or 4th day |
My pups were born on Nov 14th and my vet was a little aggravated that I brought them in on Monday. She said "we will have to see since it is going on the 5th day". She did go ahead and do it, but I was a bit worried. She had them that Thursday night, of course I wouldn't take them in at one day old. Then the weekend hit. I showed her how it really equaled 4 days. She counted Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. I showed her it was Thursday to Friday (1) Friday to Saturday (2) Saturday to Sunday (3) Sunday to Monday (4) :D It worked. Anyways I have never heard of puppies having their tails done after the 4th or 5th day. I would leave them as is. I have seen pleny of beautiful babies with their tails. I love the way mine look with them docked, but plenty of people like their cute little tails too!!! |
I would leave the tails as is, personally. But if you insist on docking this late, good luck on finding a vet who will do it. Most won't. Please don't attempt to do this docking at home. It could cause major problems. IMHO, 10 days is too late to dock without causing trauma. |
At this point, it is too late to dock them in the normal fashion...it would have to be done as a sugical procedure at this point. And PLEASE don't try the rubber band method. I'm not sure what the laws in your area are, but that is actually illegal here and you could face animal cruelty charges for it. In addition, the docked portion will not heal correctly and there will be an open wound for days that can very easily become infected.:( |
The rubber band is very cruel. This late in the game, I would leave it alone. They should have been done between 3-5 days. I usually do mine on the 3th day unkless the pup is smaller then I do it the 4th or 5th day. If you intend to continue breeding, you need to find a new vet. |
5 days Many vets here in my area go with the 3-5 days period and a firm "NO" after the fifth day. I have done mine mostly on the forth and fifth day with no problems. Definitely you need a new vet, and I would make sure ahead of time that they do declaws/tails and ask about their requirements. Yes, I think their tails are cute but not everybody wants that look , I personally would want one docked but I wouldn't put them at risk either, and if they are late to have them done, I'm pretty sure there are 100's of people that will love them the same with tails or docked. :) |
My personal opinion would be to find a new vet and have a sitdown with him/her before you breed next time. That way all your ducks will be in line and you will know what needs to be done and when it needs to be done...with that said, I think they are super cute with their tails! Please don't try to do them yourself...more people than none will not care that they have tails. If you have problems re-homing them, I will take them all! :p |
