Apple-Head Yorkies?? :confused:I read a web site and the Yorkie breeder is describing her puppies and adults as cute little Apple Heads. I have not been participating in YT for a while so I might be out of touch. Have y'all heard of this description? Is it a good or bad thing or just a come-on? |
I've never heard that term before either! maybe it's a marketing ploy, such as 'teacup' to sell puppies for hugely inflated prices to the uneducated:confused: xxx |
Honestly, I have never heard that term, but I would venture to say that no reputable breeder would classify their yorkies as "apple-heads". It's either a marketing ploy or the other thing that comes to mind is dogs with dome-shaped heads which is not a good thing..Hydrocephalus comes to mind... |

many breeders use this term to describe their puppies and they breed for 'appleheads". If I have ever even seen one, I don't know it. I also think it is a marketing ploy. |
I have heard that term when describing chihuahuas...but never yorkies...? |
I have seen several people advertising with this term. From what I have seen of the puppies they sell it means they have bred away, intentionally or by accident, from a proper head and are trying to make it sound attractive or preferable. I have a Miniature Pinscher that bites when you try to pick him up. I like to call him independent. |

Anytime you have a breeder who is purposely trying to produce pups with a cranial structure other than what is standard for the breed, you are playing with fire, IMO. Be it apple-headed, or the 'baby doll faced' yorkies you hear about. Not a good thing. |
Be careful, alot of times the rounder head is associated with an open fontanel. |

Same here. |
I would not buy an "apple-head" Yorkshire Terrier...it's a term I'd associate with chihuahua pushers/mill breeders...and if the breeder in question also raises chihuahuas, I would be even more cautious. Any time I see a breeder who raises more than one kind of dog at a time, my puppy mill senses tingle... |

Yes, me too! I had three Chihuahuas and they do have heads that are sort of apple shaped. I don't know if it is a marketing ploy or not, but you will see it often to describe the Chihuahua. I have never heard it used for a Yorkie. |
Chi's are suppose to have big round foreheads, yorkies are not!! Basically it's just a poorly bred yorkie. |

Just kidding...I'm holding out for a teacup, apple-headed, teddy bear, parti Yorkie myself. |
Interesting ..never heard of that one  |
Important re. applehead in Yorkies In a pure bred Yorkie having an "applehead" shaped skull is seen as a defect. Ideally, a Yorkie's head has a certain flatness or levelness to it (unlike cockers or poodles rounder skulls), an applehead will quickly disqualify a dog as one to reproduce or show. It is considered inferior and possibly an indicator of lower intelligence (I have NO idea if this last is true). Any way, I'd stay away from anything that said "applehead". My thoughts would be: * poor breeding, possibly exessive inbreeding; * ignorant breeder and I don't want those dogs; * silly, casual breeder who simply doesn't 'get it'; too busy being cute or pushing sales ---- again, not interested. I have a wonderful Yorkie as a pet who is also a service dog (anosmia); he happens to have his AKC papers which I've never bothered to send in as he will not reproduce and is fixed. But I still wanted to learn about the breed and am very glad I have a Yorkie. |

I heard this to describe Chihuahua's, but not Yorkies! |
I have heard this before. A lot of the breeders that breed the tinies use this term, as well as the baby doll term. To be totally honest, I do not know what that means. Does anyone have a picture (need not be yours) of an "apple headed" yorkie and then side by side an AKC standard of a correct yorkie's head - for comparison. Just curious. |

Yes they look cute perhaps but they have a very big problem that can be terminal way sooner than you think. |
