Health Testing I know there is a lot of talk that goes on here about health testing prior to breeding so my goal is to get a general consensus. A lot of people list the testing that one should preform on their breeding stock but I would like to see if anyone will come forward with the health testing that is common practice. Since there are a lot of breeders on here I think this may be an excellent resource. For example, everyone says that OFA certification is desired but when querying the OFA Patellar-Luxation stats on Yorkies there have only been 113 certifications in the past 34 years. (Source: OFA: Patellar Luxation Statistics) For breeders who know their lines in and out, what testing do you perform prior to breeding? Thanks in advance! |
My boy Gizmo is one of them :) I am thinking most people will go to the vet and have them checked out, but not send in for the certificate of OFA. The age thing is really odd on OFA he was born in 2004, but the site states his age as 19. That is strange. ANYWAY my girls I just take to the vet to get checked, but since Gizmo was used for stud service I got the OFA certification. |
Excellent info. I am interested in what the experienced breeders say about health testing. Should one do eyes and heart as well? Liver Shunt? I am taking my girl to the vet in the next few weeks and she is just over 2, so the OFA is a must, but what also should I have her checked for? |

Oh! Ok thanks! I was soooo confused LOL |
Anyone?? This thread was intended for breeders who know thier lines and have spent many, many years developing them. I totally agree with testing up the wazoo when it comes to a dog that the individual has no/limited information about the lineage. |
