I have never had this problem, but I do know that it is critical that the pups get that first mother's milk. Have you tried laying down with mom - maybe on your bed, and massaging her and sneak the pups up to her tits? If you have a helper I would kinda sorta gently keep her laying down and have the helper scootch the pups into position. I hope that someone with experience of this kind will see your plea for help and jump in. |
You may need an assistant to help you out. You have to gently hold mom down and assist the pups in nursing. The release of milk will cause hormone let down which will help with maturnal feelings. Just a little bit of nursing so that the pups can get colostrum will be very beneficial to them. Praise mom while they nurse and encourage her to lick and nuzzle them as you hold them to her face afterwards. Good Luck. |
hold her down like said to help puppies to nurse. If puppies do not get much milk, you could take them to a vet to learn to tube feed. It'll be safer than the bottle, especially if they're getting too much. They can get pneumonia and die rather quickly. They'll go down fast if they're not getting enough milk. They'll get weak and not being able to suck. |
You might be amazed at how many mothers have problems receiving their newborns when they have a c-section. Usually, mom hurts and these "things" poke her and push on her and suck. I would suggest, that if you absolutely cannot get her to accept the babies, to try milking her and giving the colustrum to all the puppies. You can tube feed but they are large enough to suckle from a bottle. If the formula comes back out their nose, the hole in the nipple is too big and too much milk runs out. Make a smaller hole in a new nipple. Does she lick on them to potty them? You can try putting a little nutristat or nutrical on the babies to get her to lick that off of them..They can bond that way. I have been mentoring 2 breeders this week who have had the same problems and so far, we have managed to save puppies and the last mom is recovering nicely. I have put e-mail and phone number in a PM to you if you need me. I might be able to offer some fresh suggestions you haven't tried. Best of luck!!! |
I had one c-section and the mom absolutey would not accept the puppy. I had to tube him for the first 2 weeks as he wouldn't take a bottle and the dropper was much too slow for me with all the other dogs to care for. He never got any colustrom for mom either. He is 9 years old now and doning just fine. Sometimes if you work with mom you can get her to accept the pups but I tried everything and nothing worked. She was a first time mom and I had her spayed afterwards as this was a full time job for me and I had enough of that. |
Sometimes it takes longer for the mother to accept puppies after a csection. They don't know what they are and they don't feel well. It's best to get those puppies on her for at least the first couple of days. Hold her and tell her how good she is - try to be very positive with her. Really try to get her to clean the puppies too. This all will help kick her in hormones. Our vet gets the puppies suckling right as our girl was waking up to help the hormones kick in. |

Did they give her any pain meds? Some vets are against it although ours will give it at a very low dosage. I think that it helps! |
