Two questions 10 week old pups First of all, I have a runt - he is still half as big as the biggest pup - the mom picks on him - she pulls him around by his ears and legs and just wont let up - he is the ONLY one she does that to - why? Does she sense there is something wrong with him? Also, the same runt - again, he is 10 weeks old - he was only 1.75 ozs at birth, now up to 1.5lbs - he won't eat dry food - the other two are fine - chomp all day - him, I feed mush to morning and night - his teeth grew in slower, but I am sure they are now as big as the others' were when they started eating dry kibble - is he just spoiled? He is so skinny, I watch him and try to get him to eat dry and he just spits it out. What should I do? Thanks all - this is my first litter and it has been fun, man these guys are as worrisome as babies! |
How is his activity compared to his siblings? Get a coffee bean grinder and grind up the kibble and either add a milk supplement or not and just have water close to it. Give him Nutri cal a couple of times a day. Mom may sense he is ill or he may be weak and she notices this so she pushes him away so the other pups aren't compromised, it is instinct and part of survival of the fittest. This may be the pup has not had the ability to nurse as well as the other pups so he has remained small. Only time will tell, and your intervention. |
I agree with what the poster above said, Have you checked the pups mouth out ? make sure it dosent have a cleft palate . I would keep a good eye on it and not leave it with the momma dog when you are not right there to watch. |
I had a litter(one and only) and the smallest boy was 2oz at birth,he was slower to open his eyes, slower for the teeth to come in and had to fight to get his turn at feedings.BUT! boy when he did grow he outgrew the others in every way.Coat, size, personality and he even taunted the others that he could get on my kitchen table looking for scraps and they couldn't:D he matured to 5lbs at 14 mths so you never know. If he is healthy and eating even if its not the same amount as the others(he is the smallest right now and will require less food) he should be fine. ALSO what did the vet say?? |
His mouth is fine - they have all been to the vet three times and she said they were all really healthy. He is a bit on the skinny side, but has just as much energy as the other two. I am wondering if at this point he is just spoiled. Aarg the phase 2 food mix is EXPENSIVE! I just want him to get on solids - it's a lot of extra work to feed him separate from his brothers… The funny thing is he is behind on everything - but his ears are starting to come up and none of the others are! |
Sorry to hear about your little guy. Has the vet mentioned hydrocephaly, liver shunt or heart problems that she can rule out? I worry about the tiniest things. He probably is just fine but it does make us uneasy when all the pups don't seem to be growing and developing along the same lines. |
