Weaning I am not sure if the mom's milk is drying up,the puppies were sucking for about 2 seconds and then stopped.I tried to give them the puppy mush but they don't seem that interested they will be 4 weeks on wednesday. Can I start them on canned puppy food? |
I introduce mine to ground up dry food at around 4 weeks, as soon as the puppies are able to start walking. I put Canidae or Chicken Soup dry puppy food in a blender and grind it until it is very fine. I put this ground dry food in a bowl in the x-pen with the pups along with a bowl of water. The puppies will go over and start licking the dry food. As the puppies get older they will start eating more and more of the dry food and mom will slowly dry up. Usually by 8 weeks the pups are nursing very little. All my moms have always had plenty of milk so I never felt it was necessary to make the mush. Some breeder prefer to wean them on mush. Either method will work but I have found the dry food method works best for me and it is a lot less messy. |

If they don't like the mush then they probably will not like canned food. I would keep just trying the mush until you can get a blender to grind up the dry food. The weaning process will be slow but they should start eating more as they get older. Most just don't like the mush once it turns cold. By using the ground up dry food you don't have to worry about the food spoiling and it is not as messy. |
I also start mine on dry puppy food at 4 weeks. I use a food processor. Warning: It is loud! I grind up a lot then store it. I add some warm water to the dry at first and, make is very wet. Good luck! |
Thanks everyone for you advice |
