weaning puppies my last litter did not want to wean. they took so long to eat their food it was unreal. i've never really had any problems with it in the past other than my litter that was born in may of this yr. any good weaning advice out there? |
I start mine out at 4 weeks with super watered down dry food! In about a week the ususally strat eating! If the mom feeds them alot then it takes longer! lily |
thanks. i did notice that my girl, mimi wanted to nurse as long as i would allow her, lol! this was her 2nd litter and she seemed to grow tired of her pups from her 1st litter early on, but she was obsessed with her pups from this 2nd litter. she is now obsessed with my newborn pups from another mommy. she can't get to them, they are in a play yard but she has access to the room they are in and she wants them so bad. these little sweeties never cease to amaze me! :p |
I do the same thing as Lily... watered down dry food at four weeks to get them lapping the food.... by week five the food is still soaked in water... but they are eating most of it.... by week 6 they are usually fully weaned.... I completely take the mom away from the pups by the 6th week. Hope all goes well with your new litter. |
Try putting the puppy food in a blender and feed it dry. Working for me . Mine started eating between 3 and 4 weeks. Hills science diet puppy food. |
My puppies are 6 weeks and not doing well on the weaning at all. We are taking Bridget away for half a day every day. Once we get home we let them all out and she let's them go to town. LOL What should we do? Should we keep her away all the time now? The puppies are eating food too, but not very much at all. I am saying less than a half a cup between four puppies. They should be way more weaned by now. Bridget just LOVES her babies! What should I do?? Thanks! |
you dont need to keep her away, wrap her that will stop them both cold! thats the quickest way if theyre not cooperating! |

wrap her chest in an ace bandage under a premie nitegown is what I use when necessary...you just want to block access to her teats... |
I never heard of such! My moms usually snap at the pups when it is time for them to wean. My puppies are 5 weeks old and only have their side teeth, not their front.I'm letting them nurse as long as she wants them to. The mother should know when itis the right time. When thiose teeth come in good believe me she will wean them. :) |
bigdog..if I cant get them completely weaned by 6 weeks I do this, for the good of the mom and her teats. |
Well Sugar usually starts weaning hers starting at 4 weeks, which i think is to soon, so i make her nurse them till they are at least 6 weeks, and i think you should at least let them nurse till they have their teeth in. My babies are 5 weeks and only have their side tushes. I haven't had any problems with babies nursing to long. The moms always snap at the pups when they has had enough. I'm just speaking of my own personal experience. My dogs may be different than yours. |
