Dilemma - my little baby's pregnant Hi all - I've been lurking aound YT forever, and its been really helpful. I have a pair of yorkies, Charlie (1 years) and Izzy (8 months), whom i did not plan to breed, mostly because Charlie has very bad food allergies, and Izzy does not fulfil the standard yorkie breed specs. Both of them are still un-neuteured today. Charlie is not neutered because he had a very bad reaction to the anaesthetic, during my vets routine pre-op test. Izzy is supposed to have hers next week, the schedule was set as per my vets suggestion. So i took Izzy to her per-neuter check-up earlier today, and to my surprise, my vet told me she was pregnant!!! i was shocked, as she never showed signs of being in heat!!! I need all the help i can get, is there any web resources that i should look at? What should i do? what to expect? I'm in serious shock and panic mode at the moment. this is completely new, i am completely unprepared. and i really don't know what to do. I mean one of the reasons i didn't want to breed to begin with is i don't have the time to take care of the whelping etc. i work 16 hours daily and travel frequently. Please someone help me....... |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I'm sorry things didn't work out to have your babies spayed/neutered before your girl got pregnant. You have found a wonderful board here with many breeders and pet owners who are always willing to help. Here is a website I have found to be a wonderful resource for all kinds of information regarding pregnancy, whelping and care of the puppies...along with tons of other information like supplies you will need to have on hand. Take some time to look it over, read the articles and watch the videos...you'll be surprised how much you'll learn! 8 mos is too young, and although, I don't like to be judgemental, I would take her in and have her spayed now. 8 mos is like a 7 or 8 year old girl being pregnant. I'm not a breeder, but, I do know you are supposed to wait until the 2nd heat to breed. It will cost you a little more to have her spayed right now, but, if it were me, and I was never going to breed her, then, I sure in the heck wouldn't take the chance of losing my female dog! JMO, but, I'm sure there will be others on this one that agree with me |

I agree with the above poster, have her spayed now. Your girl is much too young to be having puppies :( |
I feel so badly for you! I can imagine how upset you must be. My son's boston terrier (3 years old) was not spayed when they bought a miniature schnauzer puppy. They had planned to have him neutered, but before they did, he "made friends" with Sophie. She was pregnant and they had her spayed immediately. It was sad - but those would've been some UGLY puppies! |
I agree. Get her spayed now. She is much too young to have puppies. |
thanks all for the replies. I am still considering to go ahead on with the spay, i just need to find another experienced vet Where i live people rarely spay their pets, so its hard to find vets that are experienced in netuering, let alone one that doesn't intubate. I only found 3 vets in my city that have done spaying before, but our curret one is the only one that doesn't intubate the anesthetic. Izzy is just under 4 lbs, so this is a big deal for me. Our vet does not support spaying Izzy now. She wants Izzy to go ahead with having the puppies before going ahead with the neuter. She said that Izzy is about 5 weeks along, and uncovered this through the blood test. I really don't want Izzy to have to go through this, but is it really better to risk her going through the spaying with a vet that i don't tust and have her intubated during the procedure? i came here as opposed to the other boards, as i need the opinion from people who are experienced breeders. thanks again. all of your opinions are very much appreciated. |
OMG, she's not even 4 lbs? I'm sorry, but, you're taking a very high risk of losing your female..I'm sorry, but, if she goes through with it, just be prepared to lose the pup(s) and the mother. I can't believe they won't spay the dogs there..I think that's just terrible |
Yes, she is too young to have puppies and she is small...but...(and please know that I in no way encourage breeding tinies) does that put her at any more risk than it would to have her spayed, at her size, with an inexperienced vet and no intibation? What about the stage of her pregnancy...is she too far along to abort? I would think she would be at just as much risk in being spayed right now. Having them at her size and age is not ideal but it will not guarantee she will lose all of her babies and die. What would be best way for the dog...not the easiest way for the owner? What about c-section and spaying at that time? What about having the vet deliver the pups so if something goes wrong they will be there? I don't really know what the right answer is...I'm just trying to throw some suggestions out there. Ultimately the owner will have to decide what is right for her and her dog. |
I would find a vet to have her spayed ASAP! She's not far along in her pregnancy to go ahead and have the spay done. I know someone that spayed a bitch in whelp because she had some issues and spaying her was ok even with her being not very long in her pregnancy. I do encourage a spay IMMEDIATELY! I would have to say I agree with the others in this case. She is much to young and too small to risk having puppies. Is she showing signs of being pregnant? It seems so odd that she would have had a heat that young and got bred without you noticing, but if you are working such long hours then I guess it could happen. Is there any chance the vet is wrong? Another thing to consider is that if you do let her have puppies, who is going to care for her and the puppies. Since you don't know her due date, when she is getting close to having her puppies she should not be left alone so she will probably need close supervision for a week before her pups are actually born. With her being so small, if she went into labor while you were at work she could die trying to deliver puppies if she ran into a problem. If you choose to let her have pups then you need to find someone to watch her while you are working. How big is the sire? |
there is a chance that she will be perfectly fine whelping her litter.. i would not abort them .. just my opinion... its too late now.. go with the vets opinion, and be prepared for a csection.. hard decision to make...just wanted to share my prolife opinion:animal36 |
How much does she weigh? Do you not want the vets to intubate? It is safer if they do (and it is done correctly) to hold the airway open and prevent aspiration into the lungs. |
