weight of newborn same as when born Has anyone had a pup that weighed the same amount at 7 days as the pup did when born. With tiny fractional weight flucuations inbetween? Is this normal. He is on 3 3/8oz at 7 days old and the rest are up to 6oz, 6 oz, and 7 oz:confused: |
I have never had that happen. I would consult your vet. That is extremely small to not be gaining any weight. |
Your little boy may be getting pushed off the teat by the larger ones. You can try getting him to nurse by himself so he has no competition. If you don't get good results right away, you should supplement him. At this age, he should be eating every 2 hours. If he appears dehydrated, you probably should sub-q some fluids into him. Your vet could supply you with the fluid and show you how to inject him if you don't already know how. Good luck with your little guy. |
My guess is he has to work too hard to get his fair share of the milk...The bigger the other littermates get the worse this will get and you stand a high risk of losing him...I would suggest bottle feeding this little guy and see if he starts to gain weight...You may find that he may have to be separated from the rest of the litter ...Moving around the whelping box is very tiring when you have other pups twice your weight stepping on top of you and pushing you off the teat... Most all of my pups are twice their birth weight at one week old...I have never had a puppy not gain weight for more than a day!...If they don't gain weight in the first 24 hours some action needs to be taken! |
1 Attachment(s) Yes I have had this happen once and at one month we had little "Will put to sleep , we could tell he just wasn't right. He had to be hand feed and just never took off. Sometimes they are just getting pushed out and once in a while they are just not. We sure loved him while he was with us. This is Mongo and Will, Mongo grew to be 5 pounds and Will never passed 5 oz. Debbie that pic is just PRECIOUS !!!!! To the OP Lets hope its not like little Will :( I would start supplementing him with a bottle Wishing you good luck |
He is a friends little baby. I do he is being bottlefed. When I saw that pic and read the post it made me cry. I hope that does not happen to her baby. He is still 3 5/8 at 8 days old and the biggest is 8oz now |

Thanks the picture is very precious to us, as a breeder we try everything we can to keep them going and it is so very hard and very sad to let them go. To the OP I wish you all the best and pray that your puppy starts to gain soon. |

Yes, I had this happen recently. As they aged, it was obvious to me too that something was just not right with her. It was very heartbreaking, and She passed at 3 weeks old. Hopefully, this will not be the case and supplementing will help. |
Have you checked his mouth for a cleft pallet? A puppy should double it's weight after a week. If it was me I would have to try and supplement him (perhaps even tube feedings) and give him extra time with Mommy by himself. I hope he starts to gain for you! |
As of yesterday she started the tube feeding as he dropped to 3 1/2 oz. She was doing the bottle and he just quit swallowing. He also doesn't attach to mom anymore at all. She keeps him warm and feeds him every two hours, but he cries alot, even when she holds him or puts him by mom. In my opinion, the weight is not healthy and I believe the baby will pass soon. She said he kind of rolls back and forth and cannot really stay on his belly anymore. Meanwhile crying. I am heartbroken for her, I will pray for the baby, but in my heart I haven't seen anything like that and believe he wants to take a journey over the rainbow soon:( |
I'm so sorry to hear the baby is not doing well! Prayers for the baby and hugs to your friend! |
Awe poor baby!...I am sorry that this is happening but I think you are right about the outcome of this poor honey...Sometimes we get puppies in a litter that just do not thrive and are just not right...It is sad, but better that it happens now than 6 months from now...Breeding is not always joyous...Tell your friend that we wish her the best! |
