do you all know why tail docking became the "norm"? in the old days if a dog was used as a "working dog" the tail was docked to show the tax people that this dog was used as working dog (and was non-taxable) and if you owned a dog without docked tail it was considered "taxable"; so sad. i like the short tails on yorkies, dont get me wrong or start a controversy over this, but however, i do feel if an animal is born a certain way ,that's the way God meant for it to be....just my opionoin, but i, as a long time breeder have fallen into this trap. any comments??? and yes, my yorkies tails are docked....but to a med. length. not the "nub" so many breeders do. i guess it's a personal pref now especially if you show , because you must follow the leader....

Yes, I agree with you too. We're kind of behind in thinking over here, the Europeans have all but done away with this practise. But if you even want to consider showing your Yorkie in conformation you must have their tail docked. Why, isn't that part of their conformation, how they hold it up? I personally love the tail, it gives them so much more expression. I have an old Yorkshire Terrier Mag. from back 20 years ago and the debate tail/vs. no tail was going on back then! My Biewer has his tail and it's so cute, but like you said, "have to follow the leader (AKC)"...

I had never seen a yorkie with it's tail. A couple of friend's of mine we all have yorkies. One has the male that me and the other friend have used as a stud. Anyway, I got Mollie from the friend of mine that has the female. The other friend of ours got the pick of the litter from her last litter and she never had a chance to get that litter's tails docked family things came up and she just couldn't get it done. Anyway I'm so sorry for rambling on. The dog that she picked is absolutely gorgeous and she has her full tail. She is beautiful. She is playing with the idea of when she takes her to have her spayed of having it docked. I'm not sure if I would or not but that's me. On the other hand Mollie just had 3 puppies that are 3 weeks old and I did have their tails done, because I know it's the norm. Where I had the vet do theirs at was where the gold color stopped and the black began.

Sorry for rambling. I working on just a few hours of sleep. Your new puppies are adorable.

The tail docking actually began as part of their 'work'. The tail is what gets grabbed to pull them out of the rat hole. The docking prevented the long end from breaking off when pulled.
The taxation came onto play to designate a 'working dog' from a taxable 'pet'.
Since we are no longer letting our precious babies dig for rats, I would love to quit docking as they have in Europe and let them all wave their little flags. I didn't dock my mom's pup and we love Rosie's long tail.

My two yorkie girls - Gypsy Rose and Gizzie Chavi said " awwww... PLEASE don't do it ....LOL !!! OUCH!!
both have their full tails (although our two pervious yorkies did not!) .. over here docking is not as popular these days. I cannot and never have been able to post photos on this forum but if anyone want to email me I have photos of them and their tails!! Ana xx :aimeeyork
