Your personal success with AI?
 
How many of you have had to have an AI done on your females? How was the outcome? How many puppies resulted from a litter? I am seriously considering going this route with one of my females and I need some advice. I have an appointment today to have my her smeared and to do an AI if she's ready. The doctor says he has a good success rate with his AI's and I just need some professional breeder's opinions on this matter.

I am not impressed with AI
 
I've used AI twice, once when a particular stud dog could not perform, and once with a stud that was owned by someone who doesn't believe in natural insemination. One resulted in no puppies, the other gave me two oversized puppies, one stillborn due to being breech and stuck in canal. Of the two breeders I know who regularly use AI, their litters are small with consequential oversized whelps and poor survival rates. I'm not a medical person and this is a very small sample, but big enough to convince me to stay with the natural methods for the forseeable future.

I know a lot of breeders that will ONLY do AI with their dogs. They don't want to risk their studs getting hurt or coming into contact with other things the female could carry. Plus if they are far away it can be much easier than sending your female away.
I have done AI once and resulted in two healthy puppies! The male was just way overexcited so this was the only way. I would MUCH rather have a natural breeding if possible.

The key for a successful AI (regardless of what method is used) is to get the correct breeding date. Progesterone testing or LH surge testing will be far more accurate than a smear. The number of puppies is dependent on how may eggs are present, and how many are fertilized. If the male has lots of viable sperm you should have a good result with AI if you know the timing is right. The size of puppies should not be affected one way or another between AI or natural breeding, that is more genetics, fetal placement, and fetal health. I prefer natural breedings because they are less expensive LOL but I do use progesterone testing for the best chances at pregnancy.
