Problem with stud? Ok, this might be a long post but I need some advice. Here is the deal: I have a 2 and a half pound stud that I am trying to mate with my two females that are in heat right now. This will be his first time breeding. I know he will need help because he is so small and one of my females is pretty tall compared to him. The females are 6 and 7 pounds. Both have had one litter each. The issue I am having is my stud will not let me help him. He acts like both the females are not even in heat when I am around and will not hump them. He will only lick them a little when he knows I am there. The females should be getting close to standing heat because I first noticed bleeding in both of them on Thursday, October 23rd. My 7 pound female acts like she reeeally wants him today and is flagging, but he will not hump her very much. He gives up very easily on her. He goes crazy on the 6 pound female but she does not have much to do with him. She wants to lay down or run off when he starts humping her and she is not flagging. Any ideas on how to make my male more comfortable or what the issue could be? He is very comfortable around me and is never shy around me about anything else. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! |
very few studs that size will breed and I'm sorry i don't have any other advice but if he were mine and that size, I wouldn't even try to breed him. it is so hard on those little bitty ones and most people say don't do it. Do you have any other guys? |
Well, my other stud was killed by another dog a few months ago (Scooter). The breeder that I got Scooter from gave me a free breeding with her 3 and a half pound stud after I bought a female from her and she found out what happened to Scooter. She never has problems breeding him. I do have that one free stud, but I really wanted to try and use my own stud, so I am trying my hardest. I never had this problem with my other stud. He did not care that I was anywhere near, he would go at it regardless. The 2 and a half pound stud got a partial outside tie with my 6 pound female the day before yesterday, but when I walked to the ex-pen to hold him, they came apart and he would not do anything else with me being around. How likely is that she would have gotten pregnant with that one partial tie? He won't even try to hump the 7 pound female. I have them together right now and he just sniffs her every now and then. I KNOW she is ready because she is bending down to him so he can get to her and flagging like crazy. What is it with the smaller males that makes them harder to breed- other than obvious size issues? Is there a reason why he is going after the one female and not the other? |
my stud is 3,8lbs and is a great stud. I have heard and read that it is hard on a male as small as yours physically and mentally. The other breeders I knoww have always cautioned me against using one as small as yours. I found a nice little guy about this size recently but was warned from buying him. Now on the other hand, the breeder that had him "said' her stud was 2-1/2 lbs and bred with no problems. |
So should I just keep trying or should I give up and have my females bred? |

Yea, I know that she could get pregnant from that. I am just gonna keep trying with her to see if I can get at least one good tie and hope she gets pregnant. I plan on taking my other female to get her bred tomorrow since he is not even trying on her. He actually peed on her today lol. I guess that means he doesn't want her in his opinion. These dogs can be so picky  |

How old is your male? In my opinion, if you have been keeping the male with the two females unattended then I would not breed either one to another male because you really would not know if he bred them or not. I don't know how many times on here we have read about pregnant bitches that the owners never witnessed a breeding but their bitch was pregnant. Once I had someone want to use my male for stud because they had not witnessed their male breed their female and he had been kept unattended with her for hours. Because of those conditions I would not breed to his female. |
They have not been unattended at all whatsoever. I have a little trick...I put them in the ex-pen right outside my back door because it is glass and I can stand there and look through the blinds without my male knowing. He got to the 6 pound female once when he thought I wasn't looking and was turned around and tied, but then I went to assist them and the female pulled him away. He has not done anything other than sniff the 7 pound female. He won't even try to hump her- even when he thinks I am not looking. I know for a fact that he has not gotten to her. That's the problem...he just seems to have NO interest in her at all. She is definitely ready so I am taking her to be bred. |
I am glad to hear you are not leaving them unattended. I guess with two females in heat he is just confused and he has made up his mind who he likes. I always assist with my breedings and I think if your guy is ever to be successful then he needs to get used to you being there, hands on with the female. Is he still young? Most of the time I always put a old comforter on our bed and then I will sit on the bed with the male and female and let them play around some then once the male starts showing interest I will hold the female by the shoulders and let the male breed her. Of course, my experienced males don't play around, they just get right down to business. If your male is shorter then you would have to put a blanket or something behind the female to make the male a little taller. |
He will be 2 years old in January. I have literally sat in the ex-pen with them for over an hour and acted like I was looking the other way. He will not do a darn thing when I am anywhere near. I know he needs help because he is so short, but it's like he is embarassed when I am around. I need to figure out something to do with those two because she won't be in standing heat much longer. Any more suggestions on his shyness? I took my other female to have her bred. The male was going crazy so she was definitely in standing heat just like I said. |
Actually the problem is apparently more common than you would think. I had a small male one time that never could hit the target. He tried and tried. Finally when he was about 2 1/2 I placed him in a pet home. I know some breeders just AI their bitches. You might have to look into that. |
Do you have any idea what the general cost of AI would be if I had to go that route? |

My Peppy is between 3.25 and 3.5 lbs. He never ties and is a pain in the butt to breed because I have to help. He has produced 4 beautiful litters of pups. Good luck to you - if you have been "trying" with your stud, I would not expose the females to another male. |
I talked to my vet about A.I. a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly it was going to cost about $250. Normally they use the surgical procedure because it is more successful, but then you have the risk of putting one to sleep. I am just resolved to the fact that if I use Peppy, it will be a frustrating breeding that will result in beautiful pups.... is it worth it -- YOU BETCHA it is |
I know one show breeder that AIs her dogs herself all the time and has good luck. You just have to research how to do it. You can get an AI kit I think from Revival. I would like to learn more about how to do it but I want someone to show me first that has experience doing it. If you have a good relationship with your vet then you might talk to him about it. I really don't think an AI breeding would have any effects on the number, size or health of the pups. If the AI is done properly you should get the same results as a regular breeding. |

Take the female out of the house for a few hours then bring her back and put them in the pen. You might have to do this a couple times. Never let them be together unless they are breeding. I wouldn't even let them see each other if it is possible. Make him want it more. My male will only mate on the 14th-16th day. It makes me crazy because I am so afriad he will miss it. |
