Age for first litter
 
What is the healthiest and best age for a female Yorkie to have her first litter?

18 Months or 2nd Heat Cycle.....I've waited till 3rd heat, if I have felt my female wasn't quite mature enough.....But, no first time breeding after the female turns 3 years.

all my females have been 24 - 26 months before getting bred. any younger than that...they won't make very good mommies.:thumbdown

Most all of my females have been 16 to 18 months when they are bred for the first time. I have been breeding yorkies for over 10 years and I have never had a bad mommy. All are very loving and caring of their puppies. I do not breed small females. All of mine have always been over 5 lbs and most are 6 to 8 lbs.

Can any one plzzzz help me!!!!!!!
I have a 8 yr old mini fem. and a new addition,a 9wk old puppy,heres my delimma....
My puppy has been mounting our older dog and humping her like try'n to mate with here ...can any one plzzz tell me if i should be worried .. i'm pretty sure he's to young to actually get her pregnant, but dnt want to take any chances in the near or distant future.I've been told when i first got him that i have to wait untill he's at least 6 mnths to get him neutered,which we will prolly do.I baught him for my son to raise and to play with.

I was just wondering why you said not to breed for the first time after 3 years of age. Please let me know.. I have a 4 1/2 year old I have been waiting on to breed. Now the time is right and I wanted to breed her in Feb.

I would say whichever heat hits closest to the 1 1/2 yr marker. I know that 2nd heat is a rule of thumb for some, but for some dogs that can be 1 yr of age and IMO that is still too early.

At that age, the bones in the pelvic region are already to set to accomodate for carrying and whelping a litter. Breeding for the first time at that age would present a much bigger health risk for both the bitch and the litter.
I would not breed a 4 1/2 yr old girl if it were the her first time being bred.

While i'm on the subject... what is the chances of my 8 yr old Maxie gett'n pregnant at her age anyway ?? not that i want her to.i just dnt want to take that chance....

Chances are...if she is still having a heat cycle, she is still likely to become preggers. And sometimes with age the heat cycles either stop or become much less pronounced. So you have to be very observant and cautious that you are not just overlooking it.

jst read recent post on older age of breeding,i think she is still show'n signs of going into heat .is that uncommon??i sure would'nt want anything to happen to Maxie since she is 2wice over the breed'n age . still look'n 4 advice on puppy ...thx

It's not uncommon. :) Better to err on the side of caution and just act as if she is.

Years back I know a guy that bred his 12 year old chihuahua. It was her first litter. She got pregnant but had to have a c-section and the puppy died because he did not have a clue as to how to take care of it. It made me sick when I heard about it. I have heard of 15 year old bitches having puppies.

I also heard the other day about a 12 year old yorkie dieing from pymetra. I highly recommend that any bitch that is not being used for breeding be spayed.

I would not be concerned about a 9 week old puppy humping. That is common behavior for puppies. When you see him doing it I would just try to distract him and get him to play with something else. I would not worry about him getting a female pregnant until he is 6 months old and then I would definitely keep him away from females in heat.

I agree with bjh "any bitch not being bred should be spayed" :)
