concern over weight of newborn and mom An friend of mine had a litter of pups yesterday and the mom just doesn't look like? any milk is coming in. She has maybe two different teats the pups can grasp (there are 4 puppies) but my girls usually have what we humorously call "jugs". I have not seen a female that doesn't have a showing of milk. She looks like maybe two of them are a tad bit swollen, if that but the rest look like she was never pregnant. I dropped by this morning and she said that most of the pups weigh similar to what they weighed yesterday except one little male. He weighed 4.5 oz yesterday when born and then today weighs 3 7/8 oz. I am a little worried they are not getting enough? How much is too much in a drop of weight for an infant. She gave her a tbsp of beer yesterday to help the milk come in and also has given her a few recipes of egg yolks, honey, and goats milk. She said she tried syringe feeding a little bit this morning for the tiniest one and he doesn't really get it down (more so she doesn't know how much is going down his throat or out on the napkin). Any suggestions or ideas about the weights to be concerned. Not sure what to say about the milk issue for the female. When I looked at her you can tell about two of the teats are being used, but they don't look full to me. Then again I am used to my girls being "loaded". I guess this is a question of to worry or not to worry? They all have at least clamped on for about 10 min yesterday that she knows of because she alternated them on the teats to make sure they all got some colostrum. |
bumping this up for you |
do there belly look full. Are they crying alot.If there was a problem, the babies cry alot if they are hungrey, some times it takes a while for the milk to come down .How old are they. |
Is she an experienced breeder? I am asking because she probably has already recognized a problem and taken the babies to the vet. The mom might need a shot of Oxy to help bring down her milk...Also, has she checked the mouths to make sure there are no clefts or other problems? Are the babies peeing and pooping?? I would be worried about the loss of 1/2 ounce on a tiny... Post an up-date when you can, please...Thanx |
Need more info on 9 day old babies growth rate Well I called and received an update on the babies. There are 4 of them. Here are their weights on day 1 and now on day 9. They are nine days old, but I am still worried about the littlest ones. She did take all to the vet for the dews and tails and the vet said they were fine. The way their weight is charting doesn't seem fine to me, but I usually don't have problems with my girls' milk (knock on wood or something:) ) Girl 1- Day 1 was 4 3/8 oz Day 9 is 5 5/8 oz Girl 2- Day 1 was 3 7/8 oz Day 9 is 3 7/8 oz Boy 1- Day 1 was 3 7/8 oz Day 9 is 4 3/4 oz Boy 2- Day 1 was 3 3/4 oz Day 9 is 3 1/4 |
Also red, hard teats Also the vet said she does have milk, but not a whole lot of it. She said they all are nursing and have been for several days. But.....today she said that about 4 of them are pretty hard and 3 of them are red. I told her that doesn't sound good for her or the pups and I will be dropping by later. This is her first litter, and will be her last as she has decided to spay her. She had a hard labor and birth and it scared her. My female is due in about 10-15 days so I am hoping to keep them safe and maybe if the need a surrogate at the time I can put them with my babies. |
By looking at their weights, paying attention to girl puppy #2 and boy puppy #2, I would say they are not getting enough. They should have gained atleast a couple ounces not losing them. At this point, I would start supplementing the puppies to get some weight put on them. Has the mother been checked over for mastitis? Hard and red is one of the symptoms as well as puppies not gaining being another symptom. |
