Animal auction...14 week old puppies????
 

My Husband went to Mount Hope (Amish Country) this weekend to help a farmer friend buy 100's of Silkie chickens.
This was not the infamous "Exotic Animal Sale they have there twice a year.
But a farm animal auction

He seen lots of Yorkie's for sale :( AKC and CKC
"Parti Yorkie's"
You could get the Yorkie's Akc INSTEAD OF ckc FOR 100.00 MORE !!!!

One that he was telling me about ,that the mama was still nursing the 4 puppies...
Mind you this woman told all the people around here looking that they were 14 weeks old !!!!!!!!!!!
And their ears were taped and they were very little yet :(
I told him there's no way mama lets 14 week old puppies eagerly nurse!!!!
That they were much younger and the woman was lying about how little they would be !!!
I'm pretty sure about this , but I wanted to post about it...
Has anyone has every heard of 14 week old puppies eagerly nursing?
Or was she lying...I just know she was. :(
Just burned me up !!!!! All kinds of dogs for sale.
I just cant imagine selling one of my babies this way....sick sick sick !!!:thumbdown

Most of these people selling puppies were "English" (What Amish call us)
This is what happens all the time...
And it gives the Amish a bad name..Amish do NOT usually have the puppy mills. Not here in Ohio.
Our friend who husband went to help with the chickens , is a Ohio Inspector shuts them down. Most are "English"
BUT the auctions are in Amish Country ,as auctions are their way of life , so many assume its Amish Mills and its not.
They do however breed and sell puppies much cheaper then we do.

You are probably right Debbi, I have never seen a mom allow pups that old to nurse. I suppose it's possible, but doubt it. Burns me up too how they have auctions for dogs:mad:

Chizzie and Chattie both let their 14 week old pups nurse -- but only for a minute or two at a time and the pups only nursed once or twice a day at that point.

I find it hard to believe that 14 week old puppies that were being fed puppy food would be eager nursers. Life is just to full of interesting things to do to slow down enough to nurse enough for their main source of nutrition. Something just doesn't sound right about that. It breaks my heart knowing that dogs, cats and other pets are being sold like cattle. :(

Debbi, Kandie let annabella nurse for only a few seconds at that age... annabella was eager.. but not kandie..
I so hate to hear this stuff.. know it happens all the time.. but geez, I sold annabella to a neighbor in florida.. she had all her shots.. and was on heart worm and was microchipped.. and I get to see her all winter.. and her parents say we have only had her 10 days and cannot imagine life with out her.. and hence it makes me so darn happy and content.. geez I could not imagine it any other way...

So both of yours did still nurse at that age? Wow
My moms have usually started the weaning process around 4-5 weeks....and growl at them somewhere between 5-8 weeks.
Will only let then nurse a few minutes before growling.
You guys have nicer Mommies then me :)

My husband and I were talking more.
And he feels that the Mom seemed over aggressive to these puppies.
Makes me wonder if they REALLY even were her pups...
Or if they stuck these puppies in with this Mama who was smaller....
to fool others into thinking they were going to be really small.
He knows by having Moms and pups in our home that it seemed like something *funny* with these puppies.
The whole thing is sad...I agree.

And your right...they are sold like cattle...and are used for baby making machines at mills for the great price of 450.00!!!! sick !

People sell puppies at flea markets all around us too.
How could anyone sell a puppy like that?!?!?!?

I wean around 6 weeks, nursing is hard on the mom and is ready for a break by that time.

I've been to Amish country before. Thank goodness I didn't witness anything like that. Images of this nature would stay with me forever :(

Im not sure about the 14 weeks. I have never had puppies, but I have had kittens, and my Momma cat wouldn't let them near her after about 8 weeks. Im sure cats are different though :rolleyes:

If Mom hasnt started it by then I would too.
And the larger the litter the harder on them it is
And I've had a few big litters...lol
I give Mom a choice if she wants to go into the xpen several times a day
But she is not with her puppies all day anymore by that time :)

I have never had a mom let pups nurse at that age but I am sure some would. Some people don't start feeding the puppies solid food soon enough and the pup will nurse longer then. It is possible that the momma was being snappy at the puppies because she did not want them to nurse. I imagine it hurt. I do know that some breeders will lie about the ages of the pups just to make the buyer think the puppies will be small when grown. It is sad the way some people treat their dogs.

Poor moms.

We have a lot of Amish here and I have never heard of such a thing. I could be wrong, but we go up about 20 miles north of here quite a bit, and there's a ton of amish there. I never have seen an ad, a sign, nothing to suggest ever that they even breed dogs.

I have a couple moms that will let babies nurse past 8 weeks, but most cut them off around that time or before.

My Hadley is a sweetheart she would let her 15 week old little girl nurse still, but it wouldn't happen for long. ;)

I think it is the unusual dog that would allow anything more than "drive by" nursing in a puppy that old.

I have a 16 month old skin kid that does drive by nursings all day. I can see how a mama dog might get annoyed with anything more than that, lol!

Mindi I have lots of Amish within a few miles of me also.
And I can honestly say I have never seen a sign for any type of dog.
Produce yes...rockers , furniture and leather work yes..But never a dog.

I think its sad that people come from all over to sell their animals at Mount Hope Auctions. And the Exotic Animal sale is just HORRIBLE !!!
I've been there but never bought anything. So many think it a Amish thing and its not.

I have seen Amish down there have signs for Yorkie's at their homes...and they sell them very cheap.
But I would say..given that its the largest Amish settlement in the world.
The percent of Amish who sell puppies is very low.

It just makes me sick people being lied to and tiny puppies being sold at this place .
And if I had been there, I am sure I would have given this woman a piece of my mind..

That would be horrible. They could've very easily not been the mom's puppies.

I guess amish country has been so well known for puppies that trying to cash in on it.

That's just sad. Poor pups and poor mama... I don't think there are any amish in our part of the wood. I think they tend to stay away from Southern California...

Was talking to husband this morning.
And he said , you do know the exotic animal sale is this weekend...don't you?
He said they are not going down there then. Its crazy with protesters...police and people.
Wish there were MORE people protesting this...SHUT THEM DOWN...MAKE IT STOP !!!!

The auction is governed by USDA officials and all animals and birds must meet requirements in compliance with the Ohio Wildlife Laws and the Dept of Animal Industry of Ohio. At the October 31st sale
Ring 1
8:00 AM - Peafowl, Pheasants, Waterfowl, Quail, etc.
10:00 AM - Warm Room animals rotated with Exotic Birds. Bottle fed babies start at 1:00 PM. Porquepine, Cavy's, Skunks, Fox, etc. will be sold in main ring following Warm Room animals. Reptiles will be sold last. Weather permitting mice, rats, degus will be sold outside trailer. Swans followed by Kangaroo will sell immediatel following caged animals or at 6:00 PM

Ring 2
9:30 AM - Reg. Goats, Shooters, Goats and Sheep, followed by Russian Hogs.

Under Tent
9:00 AM - Domestic Animals

On Outside
10:00 AM - Empty Cages, Panels, Gates, Aquariums, Displays

I don't have a problem with livestock auctions. I grew up going to them. However, for "pets" like dogs, cats, etc, that is where I have the issue.
I have never known anyone to have a kangaroo. Strange.

The Amish totally have puppymills in Ohio. I live 20 minutes from them.
The Bargain Hunter paper is full of their ads. The Buckeye Dog Auction had been picketed for years, resulting in them moving their location.

Thank you for posting this video. I've seen many similar videos and they always make me feel SICK TO MY STOMACH! When you look into the eyes of those precious dogs, it's just enough to break your heart.

It makes me SOOO angry when these people talk about how much money you can make off these dogs. Makes me want to say to them:

GO GET A REAL JOB!!! :mad:

That video made me sick to my stomach.
