I think this is great, years ago, breeders weren't aware that breeding for certain characteristics could cause health problem, although some probably knew. Once health problems are associated with any specific trait, I think it's imperative that breeding clubs change the standard, but you will always have those breeders who choose to ignore the facts, and that why educating the average buyer helps too. |
I think this is a great idea. I remember the German Shepard when I was growing up and they have become a sad looking malformed version of what I remember. I feel deep sadness for them whenever I see one at a show. It looks painful the way they walk. |
I as well think it is a great Idea, it should be done here as well, they have the right idea, I hope the akc will follow suit as well. Just wonder how deferent will the pug end up looking later? |
ladyhawlk one ? the male you looked at for me awhile back, I placed him in a pet home only to get him back 4 months later I have him up for sell asking 400 pet home only , is that a fair price? sorry to steal your thread but I do value your thoughts on this, and would you know anyone looking for a 2yr old 6lb male pet, would love your help on this, Blessings |
I think the only problem I see with this is that in an effort to make these changes quickly the chances of other problems popping up in the breed is there. Selectively breeding for any one trait can lead to other undesirable ones. I think if done cautiously changes like this would be good. Does anyone know what the health issue related to the amount of coat they have is? I noticed the changed the length of coat allowed. |
Change will always be resisted, especially by those who see themselves as having produced the standard. I don't see how we can justify NOT breeding the healthiest dog possible. Good on them!! |
I totally agree, I am always trying to better my lines, as well as I stnd behind any health problems, knck on would not one puppy I have sold in 12 yrs has had any problems,and I do keep up with them, I have made some wonderful friends that way. But to better the yorkie is the goal, or it should be and the health above coat and looks shold always come first. thats what I think anyway,blessings have to go to bed now good night. |
I think that is good news!!:thumbup: If you saw that documentary on the BBC called "Pedigree Dogs Exposed", many breeds need to change or they will become very rare. The German Shepherds couldn't run if they had too. Many King Charles Cavalier Spaniels are born with a skull that will be too small and their brain will not be able to grow and they will die an agonizing death. I hope these changes will bring better health for all breeds. |
The BBC documentary really brought this issue to the forefront of people's minds...the guy from the KC (cant remember his name - sorry) has been on several chat shows etc here following the airing of that documentary and I think public opinion has forced change. I dont know anything about showing, or what makes a good show dog...but I think that once breeding has stopped a dog functioning as a dog, and is causing serious health problems then something has to change. |
Well I think its about time to. After seeing that programme I was absoulty disgusted at what some of these breeds had come to. People showing dogs that have major health problems and major genetic defects, some of these dogs in agony. And then judges awarding these people the top prizes. And then of course the owners going on to breed of them and just making the problem worse. I am so glad that the kennel club is trying to make changes, but then again I think it is the kennel club who is to blame in the first place. |

I think its a great Idea and its about time! Glad to see the shepherds standard will be changed too, I bet they will make it so the exaggerated rear angulation will not be okay anymore.. woo hoo! |
