Is Cutie too old to have babys before spay? Cutie will be six in November, Ive heard it is good for a female to have a litter before being spayed to prevent cancer is that true ? |
Here is a good article that explains the pros and cons of spaying and neutering. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf In my opinion I would not recommend breeding her at her age. She would likely have more difficultly giving birth and the possibility of complications could be greater. I certainly think it would be wise to get her spayed because intact females as they get older are more susceptible to getting pyometra, which could be life threatening. |
Thank you! she will be scheduled soon for spay |

I think that was sort of an old wives tale that they should have a litter. If you do the spay early enough before the hormones change up that is supposed to be better for them. Personally I wouldn't breed her at that age. For the most part dogs don't have that baby urge like humans might. I think your doing the best thing for her and I wish you both a safe spay and a speedy recovery. |
The more heats the more risk or cancer |

 This is a very good article! Thanks for the link! We are thinking about if and when we'll have Minnie and Mikki spayed. Minnie has her first heat right now and when I read the article I learned it is best to wait with the spaying until she is physically mature. She was scheduled to be spayed for today but her heat came in between. Even though we have her since about 6 weeks we couldn't take her earlier b/c she was in such a bad health condition (emaciated, hook worms...) Now I think it was a good thing and we will wait with Mikki too until she had her 1st heat. |

Spaying before a female ever comes into heat eliminates her chance of ever getting cancer. Spaying after her first heat, but before her second raises her cancer risk to 8%. Spaying after her second heat raises her risk to 25%. |
