I am so sorry to hear you lost one. Congrats on the three remaining pups!! Usually when you have a mom that had a c-section it will take awhile for her to accept them as hers. Since she didn't actually give birth to them it makes it confusing for her. Keep trying to put them on her, just make sure you are there and have control over the situation in case she wants to hurt them. Also try taking a towel and rub it on her belly and then rub it on the pups to give the pups her scent so she will be more likely to accept them. For now continue with the supplementing. Make sure they stay warm and weigh them each day to make sure they are gaining. Since mom isn't caring for them you will have to stimulate the pups to go to the bathroom yourself. You can use a warm wet cottonball and rub them to stimulate them. Hopefully with time she will learn to accept them. |
aww honey, I am sorry to hear that one baby didn't make it. I found that with a c-section Mom takes a day or so to get into MOM MODE. She should be more maternal once her milk comes in good. But you still need to try to have them nurse from her for the colstrum. Remember also her tummy is sore from the c-section so watch her close for a few days until she feels better. |

Sorry I got cut off. I wanted to add that please do not leave the pups alone with momma until you know she has accepted them. I have heard it is very common for them to attack and even kill them after having a c-section. If you can, try to get the pups to nurse from mamma. The first few days are important because that is when she has the colustrum in her milk which helps them out a lot. You may have to hold her down to do this. What a day you have had!! Please keep us updated on how things go!! |
I am so sorry one of the babies didn't make it. RIP little angel. How are the other 3 doing? Have they nursed from mommy yet? I will be praying for all of you. Good luck my friend. |
So sorry to hear about your loss. But I'm so glad Peaches and her other babies survived. Bizzy just had a c-section, and she was out of it for about 24 hours due to the anesthetic. We really had to work to get the puppies nursing, and once the anesthetic wore off, she accepted them. The babies are very small, so weigh them several times a day to make sure they are not losing weight. Give Peaches whelping pudding to help get her energy up and bring in her milk. Make sure she is drinking water, add Karo syrup to keep her stomach settled and give her energy. We considered the options and elected to give Bizzy some pain medication the first 24 hours. This did have an effect on the puppies, but kept her comfortable and resting. I felt she was better able to take care of the puppies afterwards because she had a little respite from the pain of the surgery. We wish you the best. Oh and you might check out WoogieMan's thread about Bonnie's puppies. He is supplementing now too and seems to have it figured out. |
Congratulations on your new litter. I'm happy that mom and the remaining three ar doing fine. I've never had one go through the C section, so I have no experience, but having gone through one myself, I can tell you that she is probably still a bit dazed from the drugs, and once she comes out of that she might take to them. |
Ditto the info above about being very careful that Peaches does not harm the puppies. But it is really important that you get the puppies nursing right away. Even if you have to hold her down, the sooner they nurse, the sooner her milk will come in and things may normalize. |
I'm sorry you lost one of the little girls, but glad you have 3 beautiful pups! |
Congratulations on your new litter, and I am sorry you lost one of the girls, but I'm happy that mom and the remaining three ar doing fine. I used to baby sit a pug with C section for my friend, she was pregnant with 2 but lost one, I helped because my friend had other big dogs at home and don't want them to hurt the puppy. It took a couple of day for the mom to get used to the puppy, she first ignored the puppy but later start taking car of him really well. Today is Candy's 55 days and she is just normal. |
Accepted!!! Peaches accepted her puppies around 4 am this morning! We had put her in there with them at 3 am, and made her lay down so she could nurse them. We had to do the same thing last night also. We just laid our hand on her and stroked her with the other while they nursed. So anyway, at 4 am, I had gotten up to check on the babies and Peaches. (Peaches was currently in the our bed with Mike and me becuz last night she didn't want to be near them.) But when Peaches saw me go in there to the whelping room, she came running in and looked at the puppies, looked at me, and then jumped (carefully) in! She sniffed the babies and then sat down on the opposite side of the box from where the puppies were - But then she got up and went over to the one that was crying and nibbled at her back foot and leg then she nibbled on her neck. I thought, oh no! She is fixing to attack and kill it and I have to watch her try to do this. But then she picked it up (very softly) by the back of its neck and took it back with her and then she began cleaning it...... Then the other two babies crawled over very loudly, and she began cleaning those two babies as well. She then laid down and put her arm and head over them and snuggled up with them. I took a picture of this and will put in my album today. It's too sweet not too share plus a huge thing that we thought we'd be dealing with for several weeks. I hope yall area as happy as me! Yay!!! I hope to talk with many of you soon. But for now.... I'm going back to bed!:) |
Yeah!!:D |
I just read your posts.... Hey you guys! I read your posts after I wrote my last post to you. So I need to answer those. I wanted to tell you that we didn't have to supplement them at all. We were about 5 minutes away from that though. She was so sore on her stomach and I put a drop of formula on each nipple and then helped them carefully open their mouths so they could attach. And Wallah! It happened! My mom made the whelping pudding yesterday before we picked them up so we'd have it. I have a great mom! Anyway, I gave her some of that and she absolutely loved it!!! This morning she ate about a cup of it. She won't leave the puppies now (Yay!) to drink water, which is good for the pups but not for her, so I put it in a medicine dropper, the kind you buy for kids medicines. And I filled it up with warm water (I haven't thought of using Karo, but I will do that too) and I felt that warm water would feel better than cold for her tummy. Anyway, she gulps it down in the dropper. The only reason she hasn't drank more than that, is because I am the one who stops. Since about 4:30 am this morning, she has drank about 2 cups of water. So anyway, I'm glad she got her colostrum in those puppies. They gave me an antibiotic and some pain medicine. They used gas on her during her procedure and they gave her a double dose of the pain medicine. They said it's non-narcotic so it doesn't make her loopy or dazed Its called Metacam Suspension liquid, which she likes the taste of that too. And I have been stimulating them to make them use the bathroon too. I do it actually right before they nurse so that there is plenty of room for the the colostrum and milk and then after the nurse. She has been panting alot this morning but not sure why? Is it the pain? And then after she nurses, she starts shaking. Is that the pain too? Ok, I'll be back after my nap. Bye for now, but not for long. |

So, so happy for you and Peaches. Things should normalize now and everyone thrive. My moms usually pant alot during the first few days. Their milk is coming in and they are adjusting hormonally, so I don't think that is abnormal. I always give whelping pudding right after nursing, this may help with the shaking. All of my moms needed to be hand-fed the first few days after whelping. I hold the water bowl up to them so they don't have to move much to drink. She needs lots of water for her milk production, so offer this many times during the day (and night). I had to actually hold the kibble mixture in my hand for them to eat. Again, not asking them to move from the bed at all. Are you supplementing with Pet-Cal for calcium? Breeders handle this differently, but I always supplement. I crush 1/2 tablet of Pet-Cal and mix it with a couple spoonfuls of cottage cheese. I continue to give this morning and night until they have weaned the puppies. Other breeders just offer more dairy-type foods. Ask your vet about this if you are unsure. Good luck. |
Congratulations on your 3 healthy babies!! :D |

Good luck.[/quote] The only thing I've given her to eat has been Whelping pudding because I didn't want her to eat solids until this evening maybe. They said the pain medicine might make her stomach lining burn so that's also why the dairy up to this point and not any kibbles or chicken. Is Pet-Cal mostly calcium? I don't have any, I was just going to supplement the kibble with dairy (cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese, and whelping pudding),etc. But I have Tums. IDK if she would eat them or not, but I do have that. Is PetCal better, or could I use Tums instead or until I get some Pet-Ca l? We go back Saturday to get the dew claws and tailed docked so i can ask then about the PetCal. I did ask the vet if there was anything I would need to keep her healthy and happy during the whelping and such as vitamins, supplements, etc. and he said no, she was in great shape. He has seen her twice during her pregnancy for regular office visits, consider them pre-natal office visits, :) which he gave her full exams during those visits. But if it's something that would help her, I'm all for it. I've been spoon feeding her the pudding and will hand feed the kibble and chicken when I do put her on that, I'll give her a little at dinner and then give her more gradually. The kibble is in there in her area, but she hasn't eaten any of it yet. I also feed her right after she nurses too. I think I may need to give her 1/2 before and 1/2 after. Maybe she needs the little extra energy boost. I'll try it at next meal time. Thanks for all the information and support with my little ones! |
Well..... Well...... I have no idea how I did that to the posting below. I haven't taken a nap yet and I fell asleep numerous times w:coffee_n_hile writing that last post. Actually, that's probably how it happened, Sorry about that.:dogzzz: |
Tums with calcium added is used by some breeders to up the calcium after whelping. I'd use that now and check with your vet about Pet-Cal -- it is mostly calcium, but also has vit. D in it. Crush the tums and mix with cottage cheese or whelping pudding. The puppies should be nursing all the time, or almost all the time -- as much as possible. Is she with them all the time now? Sounds like you need some sleep. Hope you get a nice nap and someone else can take over for awhile. |
Saw the album, congrats, sorry you lost that little one. |
Some more questions My mom is making another batch of Whelping Pudding right now. She only has one more serving and I have Tums so I can give her that too. Yes, the puppies are with her all the time now. She's being such a good mommy now.... I guess when I started thinking about her being a good mommie, I had that underlying feeling that she would hurt them after I saw her attack the other two puppies I got. I guess I just brushed that feeling under the rug, so to speak. She didn't have panting or shaking after she let them nurse this last time. She is constantly cleaning them now and they are constantly nursing. The big one is not even being mean to the little ones when they nurse by pushing them out of the way. Which is really good. I got some really good pictures that I'm fixing to download to my photo album that I can't wait for you to see! Have you ever used that waterless shampoo? Even tho I think Peaches is beautiful, I do realize that she needs to be combed out and bathed. I can't remember where I saw it in the postings, how long you have to wait to bathe her after she's whelped and had staples put in. And to see if anyone used it and thought it was any good. Thanks for sticking around and answering all my questions. |

No bath until the stitches are out. i just take a warm washcloth and wipe my moma's off. I've never used the waterless shampoo. I also put a little carnation dry milk powder mixed in with cottage cheese & yougart. My girls like the vanilla yougart. |
I have NO idea about breeding, but I see lots of people help you so glad:) |
Bizzy had "inside" sutures, so no stitches to take out. I was able to bathe her just on the bottom area the next day, and full bath on day 3. I agree that with staples you should wait. glad to hear they are all doing so well. Going to look at your album. |
aww glad to hear that! |
To dock or not to dock? Hello, We're getting ready to take the babies and momma in for a checkup and to get their tales and dewclaws done. Not looking forward to going back to the vets though, ya know? I was thinking about NOT getting their tails docked. I've seen pictures of some with their tales left on and they are adorable. Reminds me of the Shih-tzus, which I used to have. I don't know, having doubts right now, so I better make up mind really quick. I have asked questions to friends and such, if you were out buying a registered yorkie, and you looked at 5 different breeders with litters, would having their tails docked be a determining factor in buying one for a pet? Say if came down to two babies, one being mine, and one being from another breeder, and you liked them equally, the only difference being the tails, would you take the one with the tail docked or not? They all said that it would not be a determining factor in which yorkie they would choose. It would be the yorkie itself, personality and how the pet reached out to them. And 90% of them said, they thought the tails looked better not docked. So I don't know. What are your thoughts? |
If I could find a cute yorkie with great personality from a good breeder I'm sold! But, having a tail for me would personally be a bonus. I like how they look with their tails!!!! :D |
being that it is standard in the US for having tails dock i would go with the breeder with the docked tail..but that is just me...hehe |
Georgia, did you ever post the story of what happened during the whelp and what lead to the c-section? If you did, I must have missed it. But I'd be interested to hear how that all played out. |
I have seen yorkies without their tail docked and they are cute, but I would go with the breeder with their tail docked since it is the standard in the the USA. |
