Check out my sick little girl that i kept alive [http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...61QUOTE=Woogie Man;2282607]I posted earlier that I had gotten about 2.5 cc formula in the smallest girl. She handled it fine but at the last feeding she was still kind of full and would only take about 1.5 cc but her belly was nice and tight. Think I'll back off just a hair from the 2.5cc on her next feeding. The other girl is definitely getting a good share of Mom's milk and had a firm tummy but I got 1 cc down her anyway. I'm still giving both the broth. I have the Nutri-drops but for now will stick with the broth instead. I can give them that with every feeding so it's a more continuous source of nutrients it seems. The bigger one that I'm feeding has good spring action on her skin so I'll stop the sub-q on her but the other one still needs it. Her skin seems more elastic and not so thin as before but still doesn't spring back like I'd like it be. Denise, the 1cc every 12 hours for the sub-q is my vet's recommendation but it does seem like they've been slow to re-hydrate. Thanks for the advice. I may up the volume and go a little more often. I have never done it before so have just been following what he said but, given the results I'm seeing, what you say makes sense. Good luck with your little boy. If he's made it to 2 weeks and is gaining, sounds like he'll make it. I do have a heating pad for the babies but the bigger ones seem to stay off it during the day. It's been in the mid 80's here in the day and around 70 at night. When they're off the pad, they're kind of sprawled out and not bunching up together so they're not getting cold. The little one I keep on the pad unless she's nestled in with Mom. Thanks for all the advice, y'all. I'll post again later after a couple more feedings. Jim[/QUOTE] Quote:

Oh, Belle is gorgeous! Her color is a bit richer but her expression reminds me so much of my Scarlett. Congratulations, your efforts certainly paid off. :) They're so worth it, aren't they? I'm still watching mine like a hawk, but if my lying eyes aren't deceiving me things are looking up here. Not out of the woods yet, but tonight I'm getting cautiously optimistic. |
That is great news!! Hopefully you will have an uneventful night. |

I'm so glad. Crossing my fingers here. |
Feed slowly DONT FEED FAST THE PUP WILL SUCKLE AND JUST LET FEW DROPS OUT AT A TIME..Im off to work but please keep us informed...I hope everything went well last night..I always give my Lola a quick warm bath after a couple of hours then feed her some chicken broth...Its hard work on them. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND KEEP US INFORMED..IM OFF TO WORK BUT WILL BE HOME AFTER 12..LOTS OF GREAT HELP HERE ON THIS SITE...GOD BLESS. LISSETTE |
Thankfully, it was an uneventful night. All pups are doing well. The smallest one is taking in just a bit more food and seems a little stronger. Her sister is nursing off Mom some so I've backed off a little on the amount I feed her and she's looking good. Lissette, I'm using an eyedropper to feed them and I take it slow, just letting the puppies dictate how fast they eat. With the dropper, it's easy to meter their intake so no danger of the food backing up through their noses and such. Bonnie still helps by cleaning off their milk mouth and diapering them when they're finished eating. We're co-mommies :). I'll be so happy if the rest of the day goes as well as last night. Well, off for another short nap. I'll post again later with an update. Thank you all so much for the concern and advice. Jim |
Glad you had a good night |
I'm so sorry about the 2 little ones that didn't make it:( It sounds like you're doing everything in your power for the rest of Bonnie's babies. There are a lot of people here who know SO much about whelping and babies so I know you're receiving excellent advice. I'm saying prayers for Bonnie and the rest of the babies. Hang in there! |
Im so glad you all did well last night..How are you guys doing now...Are they eating and getting a little fuller. It seem to take about 2 weeks to get Belle a little fuller. she started doing better after a few days then all of a sudden she looked as thou she was not gaining weight and looking real punny..I just had to feed her more and tell her I was not going to let her die..She cryed alot and one day I was resting in my bed and Lola picked her up and jumped on my bed and layed tiny Belle on my stomach, like saying help her please..Just watch them because they seem to lose body heat and weight real fast. like one feeding....I dont mean to scare you but I dont want you to feel alone in this..God Bless those babies and you for taking care of them with little sleep..... |
So glad your night was uneventful -- you've had enough for a while. I'll be watching and sending my best wishes to you. |
Lissette, I'm happy to say that things are still looking good here. The tiniest girl has made a real turnaround. She's looking less frail and is beginning to plump a bit. She's also a little more active today. I caught her earlier working a teat! (hooray!) When her next feeding came around, she didn't take as much food but her belly was nice and firm so she was getting something off Mom. I'm not relaxing with her feeding schedule but it's a real difference in her since last night. I think it was due mostly to giving her the extra sub-Q that did the trick. I didn't do as much as Denise (Majestic Yorkies) said she was doing, but did start doing 1cc every 6 hours rather than the 12 hour schedule my vet recommended. The difference is really noticeable. The other girl I've been feeding is getting a good bit from Mom and is only taking a little supplement but is looking good, too. I did the extra sub-Q on her, too. Before, even though they were getting a good amount of food and the beef liver broth, they just weren't hydrating as they should. It makes so much sense, too. Proper hydration is required not only for regulating their temp but also for proper organ function. I'm devastated about the loss of the two girls but am very hopeful now for the remaining ones. I can't believe how little sleep I've gotten but it's so worth it to see these little ones bounce back. I've made an appointment with the vet for tomorrow. Hopefully they're thriving enough to get their tails and dew claws done but it's his call on that. I'll update later on but can tell you that it feels like we're out of the crisis mode now. Everyone here has been wonderful with their concerns and advice and I do appreciate it so much. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa  Jim |
Jim, just a word about the tails and dew claws. My vet wants them all over 4 oz. before he will do them. My last large litter we did in 2 stages, and the little ones were a week old before they were docked. I was glad I waited on them. They all did fine. |

Let me bump this for you and see if anyone responds. |
Hello there, How are those babies and momma doing..Did you have their tails docked yet. The breeder we baught Manolo from left one of the pups tails long...CUTE. WHAT A CUTIE PIE...I like their tails too bad its not that popular in the US. What the heck you just need to keep that little girl..Smile......Lissette |
Warming sub q fluids How are you warming the fluid up to 98-99 degrees? I have a pap puppy at 10 days old that is not gaining like I would like to see and has looser stool than I like. I have lactated ringers and used to sub Q one of my cats so I am not worried about the process, but I'd like to warm up the solution a bit (but not too much). |
You know, Im know expert but I made sure it was luke warm like when you warm a babies bottle. I have gotten all my learning from mannnnny calls to to ER vets in Dallas..Good luck I hope your baby gains. This might just be your small baby. I have 3 babies with me now one is 1.5 the other is 1.98 and the tiny is 1.2 lbs. They are 10 weeks on sunday..Lissette.... |
I dread having to post this but we lost our third girl today. I'm shocked because we thought she was doing so well. Late yesterday we noticed she had a bit of a 'cannon butt' and was irritated. She still seemed pretty good and was eating and showing some vitality. She seemed to fade as the night wore on though it wasn't apparent at first. As it seemed like she wasn't perking up, I started feeding her just a small amount every 45 minutes or so, trying not to stress her system. Around 11 AM I noticed some blood in her poo. She continued to eat just under a cc every 45 minutes but passed around 2 PM. It's beyond words how I feel about this. As for the others, I took them to the vet today. He did the tails and dew claws on 2 of them but felt it was too risky to do the small one. He explained that it has more to do with size than time since birth as to the safety of having it done. He said it would be no problem in her case to wait a few more days before having it done. The two that had it done are just fine and the small one is doing well and nursing although I'm nervous about her losing even the slightest amount of weight. I've supplemented her a couple of times today just to make sure she's getting enough. The two bigger ones are now in the 6 to 7 ounce range and the small girl is 3.7 so she is gaining. I don't know what to do with myself with no babies to feed and Bonnie is sad too. Thanks, all, for everything. You've been great but I couldn't pull these babies through. Jim |
Jim, it's ok, if she had blood in her stool, then something was wrong with her anyway, you did everything you could and that is all we can do, I am so very sorry, your in my prayers, I have been thier too many times, it hurts I know, but this happens when there are tinies in a litter, the malt boy is still doing well, his one eye has opened but I can still loose him, I know that, all I can do is keep trying, this will be the first tiny puppy I have bottle feed from day one that has lived, if he makes it, and I will be as lost as you, if he does not. It is just part of breeding, the down side I call it, keep watch on the other girl, sounds like she will do fine. I do hope so, my heart goes out to you, and bonnie, blessings your friend Denise and if you need me you email me anytime!:bighug::angelyork:crying::cry8::littleang |
I am so sorry for your loss of the 3 girls, I know how hard it is, hang in there you have the joy of 3 others and Bonnie. I am really sorry, sounds like you did everything possible under the sun to save them:( |
Oh, Jim, I know this is painful for you. I'm so sorry. It is so hard to see them failing and not be able to change the outcome. I'm looking forward to brighter days for you and Bonnie. |
wow i am just now seeing this thread...congrats on you new litter....and i am so sorry for the loss of your 3 little girls...please keep us posted! |
You know, my heart goes out of you and Bonnie. I was praying for you guys but now you just must think about the 3 that are left and smile as they grow. GOD BLESS YOU and please send me pics of the pups as they grow..Ok...We all want to see them.....Lissette |
i am so sorry about the 3 girl...i have been following this thread and i thought everything was looking up...may the 3 girls rip! |
Jim I am so sorry you lost 3 of the little girls. Hope all is going well now with the others. |
How are things going, Jim? |
Hi Jim, I am so sorry to hear your loss, I hope everything is doing well with the rest of the puppies. My Candy is due this week (61 days today), she has two puppies, this is our first litter and I hope everything will go well for her. Bless you all! |
I thought I'd give an update on Bonnie's pups. I FINALLY got the little one's tail and dew claws done today. I was afraid about her being too old to have it done but she did great. No squeals while getting it done and she's doing fine now. She's only 2 weeks old and this was her 4th trip to the vet. I brought her in Monday and he still wanted to wait a couple more days but today he was happy with her progress and went ahead with it. The others (1 boy and 1 girl) are doing fine but are little fattums. They're both just over 11 ounces each and their eyes opened today! My little one is 6 ounces and hasn't opened her eyes yet. They're all little cuties. I just love their look when their eyes first open. I'll get some pictures of them up soon. Jim |
Just reading thru this thread today.... Glad the surviving pups are doing well.... sounds like the little one is here to stay! Hope all continues to go well with your three little darlings! |
