I'm considering breeding.....?'s
 

Ok so here is the story I was working a full time job but decided to stop working so I could be home with my son before and after school. I have been thinking about breeding and reading a lot. I'm not doing it for the money I love my dog and think this would give me something to do to take some of my spare time away. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or if they have any websites, books, ect they would recommend. I wouldn't start doing this for probaby another year or two if I do so I can learn as much as possible prior. We will be moving to a small town and there aren't any breeders in the area. I was thinking this would give people a chance to own a puppy that is brought up well. I have also been checking into seeing which companies offer samples of their products so if I decide I could make sure each new parent had a starter kit and information. If they don't offer samples than that is something I will work on providing myself. I have already compiled a list of things I wish I had knew to start making information sheets for the new parents.
Sorry that got a little long didn't want someone to just think I have decided to do this for the money, or some other strange reason. If I am a breeder I want to be one that new parents can call to answer any ?'s they may have.

I appreciate the fact that you're trying to educate yourself about breeding beforehand....however...IMO, there are way too many dog breeders out there already, why add to the problem of pet overpopulation?

As far as websites where you can get great information, you have found it. :) One of the books that I liked to read during my research on breeding was, The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog. There are others as well...

No offense but petshelters/rescues aren't for everyone. It isn't like I plan on breeding so many puppies that if I can't find a home I wouldn't be able to support them.

In regards to having spare time with a child it isn't that hard to do. Its being organized and having a schedule we stick too. We do a lot, but there is always time when hes in school, ect.

Everyone is entitled to their oponion and yours is not to breed which is fine with me. I am really looking for advice from people who do breed so I can make an informed decision. Thanks for your advice though.

I suggest that you obtain some genetic and breeding seminars.

In addition, if you haven't already begun to, attend some dog shows (this will help you determine your type of yorkie), talk to breeders first hand....familiarize yourself with the standard. And most of all, start with the best foundation that your money can buy.....health, conformation, temperament are the uptmost of importance....

Just wanted to add a thread that has a good link to a vet site . You can never learn enough. I know I am continuously learning.

Thanks I seen this post the other day. I have actually read and printed that site off. Thats what prompted me to make this post I was hoping there were some other very good sites out there or recommended books.

Just keep asking questions. Find someone near you that can mentor you. If nobody is near you, there's lots of us here that can offer help and advice as well.

It speaks too being a successful breeder.....The first great hurdle for the successful breeder is to recognize a high class dog when he sees one.

Here's a referral list of the YTCA breeders, in Florida: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America About The Club, maybe you could find someone who is willing to mentor you. I think attending shows is a great way to learn about the breed, and develop and "eye" for the breed.
