Question about a puppy I have a friend with a litter of Shih Tzus that are a month old and one of them is not using its back legs well. He will try to walk with them, but the legs sorta go out to the sides and are very weak. He tries really hard to walk, but his back end just goes limp it seems. But he does have some muscle tone and can move the legs. All I can think of is that there could have been some sort of injury at birth? |
Is the puppy fat? Often overweight puppies take longer to start walking. She needs to be sure to put the pup in an x-pen with braided rugs or some type of bedding that is not slippery. Once the puppy can get good footing he should start walking in a few days unless there is a physical injury. |
It sounds like he is a Swimmer Puppy. Here are some links for you: Swimmer Puppy The Swimming Puppy Syndrome SWIMMERS PUPPIES - Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia Swimmer Puppies: Puppies that have Difficulty Standing |

This was recently discussed in the sick & emergency section. Here's the link..http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...eg-issues.html |
No, it isn't that, this puppy can use his front legs perfectly fine. He is actually pulling himself around with his front legs. He is a good size, very healthy and playful, just his back legs are funky. |

Ugh, ok, so some of the swimmer puppy sites say that it can be caused by a slippery floor, effects the back limbs, and the puppy will be fine, and other say its this devestating disorder that effects all the limbs and the pup will die. How confusing. |
