I just wanted to share a site that I found before I decided to get into breeding. I encourage all of you who have decided or are trying to decide that you want to get into breeding. I know that alot of new would be breeders come here asking questions and then get upset because the advice they are given may not be what they want to hear or the person giving the advice may not use the tone the OP thinks should be used. Well all they are trying to do is tell you what needs to be done before you venture into that area. Most of us are doing this for the betterment of the breed and we adhere to the standards as much as naturally possible. So before you decide that your little girl wants to be pregnant or is so cute that you want one just like her, or maybe your little boy would make a good daddy and possibly produce little one just like him. I encourage you to go and read some of the articles first.

good post but the only thing I want to add is maybe 'most' aren't doing this for the betterment of the breed....too many are seeing dollar signs... which makes being a good breeder even more important.

Thank you Villette, I agree that there are alot out there that are far more interested in the $$$$$ than in the betterment of this breed or any breed for that matter.

Another thing you may think about before breeding. Is today's economy, I'm seeing reputable long time breeder/exhibitors having difficulty placing their pups because of the economy down swing. So, if you think you're gonna make a fast buck on the backs of your wee one.....think again.

So true in fact several breeders I know are having trouble selling their pups to. I think it is also important to have buyers already lined up with some extras just in case a few decide they just can't afford a puppy right now. I am keeping my fingers crossed that when I decide to breed Friday that the economy is back to normal otherwise I may not breed her at all.

I've noticed that though the economy is bad and the market is already flooded there is a great deal of breeding still going on. I'm taking a break for a while. i have my show potential and don't want to add to an already overburdened market. These angels aren't my job, they're my responsibility.

Yep there is. I just hope things change. We already have more than enough at rescues and in shelters.

So very right on you all are!!!! Wtg good posts!!!! I so agree dollor signs is what some see and believe me as a breeder i know that you really dont always come out ahead. All It takes is one massive vet bill from a csection or trouble with female and you can lose pups, mom and still have bills...

I totally agree! I'm taking a break on breeding for awhile. Although I don't have any pups to place I'm just gonna enjoy showing the ones I have. And my showing will be limited for awhile with the ecomony on the downswing...

My main reason for posting this was because I have noticed alot of people coming on here and saying they want to breed or are thinking about breeding their female/male because they want one just like her/him or they have friends & family that want one just like them. And then when experienced breeders try to give them advice they don't want to listen and make it seem like the Exp. breeders are the bad guys. This is what makes it hard for the ones starting out that want to do this for the right reasons. They tend to forget about the dogs and only focus on what they want. Whether it's money or just because. Sad thing is the dog is the one to suffer especially when something goes wrong.

I loved reading this thread!! The love for the breed really comes through!

There is so many things to consider when breeding......genetics, reproduction, neonatal care, nutrition......I just cringe when someone says they want to breed cause their family wants one just like the one they plan to breed. This breed is so complex, with so many breeds behind it you never know what you'll get. I can only pray and hope that those that are planning to breed do so with open eyes, education, a knowledgable mentor and the best foundation their money can buy.

Great Posts!! I try and stay away from the breeder section - since it gets me so upset and mad - so many people breeding and have no idea what they are doing to our breed.

The worst one I have heard is they "want to breed to spread love to others and let them enjoy the breed at a good price." Ugh! They do not know what our standard is, what a pedigree is, no testing down, just put dog A and dog B together since they think they will make good pups. Or they say I want to breed for pets - not show. Tells me they know nothing about genetics and why people show.
Okay I got it out. I feel better now.

Also --- I have been deciding wheather to share this or not.. but here it goes...most YT people do not know this -
but the talk is out there among the professionals - that it is frowned upon to post on here and we should not if one wants a good reputation. I thought about this for awhile and thought - How are people in our breed going to learn? How can we better the breed? How can we protect the standard if we do not help and educate others. If breeders with great knowledge stay away - then only uneducated will share with one another and may totally mess it up completely. I am very thankful that when I first got started in yorkies/showing that there were very edcuated people in the breed that shared their knowledge with me. And it is with great respect that I pass this knowledge on.
P.S. I am still learning more even to this very day.

I know what you mean. I am grateful that I have had great breeders like so many here to help me while I was learning. I continue to learn more everyday. It's funny because my friends think I am crazy for doing so much research on the Yorkie breed. I just tell them that I do it because I love this breed and I have since I was 5. Plus my mom has always told me if your gonna do something do it right the first time. So thank you all for helping me to learn.

Before considering breeding , a breeder shoud have a goal , the more definite,the better . A successful Yorkie breeder must know what they exactly want in term of balance , type , temperament etc .

The first great hurdle for a successful breeder is to recognize a high class Yorkie when he or she sees one .

Knowing to recognize the qualities and faults in our breed is very important , to be honest with ourselves during evaluation is a must .

Amen to that! I see so many yorkies in the ring that shouldn't be there hence shouldn't be bred. I see so many bad rear movement, front movements and off top lines and goes from there and they still finish and breed them....one should evaluate their own breeding program and be honest with themselves! I see so much "kennel" blindness....
I may be showing my Molly who is on the small side but she has awesome structure and movement and I'm show casing my breeding program but she'll never be bred because she's just too small for me...although I have been told by some very reputable and responsible show breeders that tell me I'm nuts for not breeding her because they think she's not too small but for me personally she is so hence she's just show casing the type of structure and movement in my breeding program. I know her faults and if she had more than 3 she wouldn't even be considered to show at all.....I just wish more people would research everything with health being of the UTMOST importance! What ticks me off the most is "I just want my childrent to experience the birthing process, or I want to give my family a pet" UGH!

This is an excellent thread and maybe admin might make this a sticky.

For me the most important point, is what am I trying to improve? and how do I do it? And am I prepared to keep all the puppies until they are spayed or neutered if I don't see an improvement? The economy is poor but the vet wants his payments and it is very costly to properly raise a litter until they are old enough and big to be spayed/neutered and placed especially if they aren't pre-sold. JMHO
