How much calcium? I was going to post this in the health section but I feel this a question more for the experienced breeders here. As many of you know Khloe had four babies three days ago, well I am wanting to prevent any calcium defiencies by adding a little to her current diet. But I know too much can be bad as well, so how much is the right amount to give a small dog? I have been mixing bone meal with her food, but I am not sure if thats enough. Are the calcium/phosp. tablets ok to give? Or does it need to just be calcium alone... Thanks to anyone that can help me! |
anyone please? Do people just suppliment and not even know how much they are giving? |
After mine whelp, I either give them cottage cheese for the first couple weeks or 1/3 C. Esbilac twice a day for a couple weeks. I honestly don't know of a "correct" amount to give. If you are feeding a good quality food, that will help as well. |
Be careful with suppliments remember, the body releases calcium as a response to specific need......if you suppliment too much, your female's body will stop releasing / producing naturally and rely on supplimental release..... Your vet should know your dog's needs as her care provider, I would rely on him / her for specifics on the dosage and type of suppliment needed. |

The best preventative is through foods high in Calcium. Feed puppy food, and give 1/3 cup of milk replacement 1-2 times daily depending on size and size of litter. I've never (knock on wood) had low calcium post whelp doing this, and also gets her body back in shape and not so skinny. |
