Need Help With Embilical Hernia
 
Hello. I have a female having puppies right know. We have been raising yorkies for 5 years. I have never had a puppy with an embilical ? hernia. I think her first one may have one. There is a tiny white bulge where the cord connects to the belly. Is there any thing I can do for it to help. Will it damage her for ever or could it be repaired at a later time. thanks in advance for your answers. scott

These types of hernia's are quite easy to repair..don't worry yoruself..besides it is too early to tell if it is really a hernia..might be gone in a week..if not you can tell the new owner to have it repaired with the pup is spayed/neutered..never had to have one repaired before that time. If it worries you, tehn let the vet fix it at 8 weeks....sometimes I will get 2 in a year, then go for 5 years and never see them.

We have another boy. thats 3 and there is more to come.

without knowing how big the bulge really is, I'd have to say that it's still too early to tell. If I remember correctly, Gracie pulled a little to roughly...IMO and a couple of the pups I was concerned about having a hernia. Nope, not one had it. What I considered rough is probably just the norm.

Congrats on pups! Keep an eye on the possible hernia, sometimes they can be aggravated by mom cleaning too eagerly. I had one girl with one that concerned me, it was reducible but wouldn't stay in and I had the vet put two stitches across the reduction to keep it from protruding and possibly getting worse. This was just a temporary measure to help her hold off having surgery until her spay. It was successful, so was a good option in that situation. Be mostly on the watch for any changes in size or severity and if it is not reducible it may require earlier surgery to repair. What you are seeing right now may just be some swelling from birth fluids and not a hernia at all, give it some time to resolve before you get too worried.

Thanks you guys. Well I think I was just a little over protective. I just check puppies and the small bulge has gone down. Probally just some swelling. And Katie-Did just had another boy. That makes 4. Watching her to see if any more signs of pushing. THANKS AGIAN SCOTT

I think she is all done. We have 4 boys and 1 girl. Just gave her about 3 oz. of cottage cheese and a small helping of puppy food. She ate it all and drank some water. Puppies are all doing fine.
